I always use the engine to help me slow down. Always have on my cars too without issue. Part of it is I hate using the brakes, I like things to be nice and smooth and using the engine does that. I figure why waste that energ

y. Wish we had some kind of regen braking that put power back in to the battery!

I think it's just as a couple of the guys already said, I really feel it's the style of pipes you're using. I used to have Samson Cannons on mine (similar to long shots) and got it all the time I let off the throttle. Upshift, downshift, anytime. Switched over to Roadhouse 2-1 and don't have that affect anymore. I believe the only "fix" for it is another pipe or another type of baffle possibly. I guess it just depends on if you like that sound or not as to whether you should "fix" it.

I believe it states in the manual to never use the engine as a brake. If you are going to be slowing down more than a couple of miles per hour you should be pulling in the clutch which should stop the "Jake Brake" effect. As what speeds are you experiencing it? It may be just adjusting your riding style.

I need to get the manual out - I rarely use the brakes unless I'm coming to a complete stop or someone pulls out in front of me. I've been doing this for 35 years. It will be hard to re-learn.

when ever your braking you should disengage the clutch and use the brakes its cheaper to get new pads and rotor then it is to rebuild a transmission or engine. only time i let the engine rev down is if I'm just letting off the throttle and planning to get back on it like in a turn or something.

Jake braking is different than just downshifting I believe. ALWAYS downshift--that doesn't hurt the engine.

Savagegordo, If your running straight thru exhaust, it will "rap" on decel, I had hk's with straight thru baffles, I took some gutter screen and rolled it up into a 12 inch long tube and put it in the end of the pipes, with a longer baffle bolt to secure it, It stopped the rap...

I have been down-shifting for 50,000 miles now, which is effect, using the engine as a break. What is the downside of doing this? (besides disobeying the manual ).

Yea, kind of wondering that myself, not doubting direction from the owners manual and especially Java. I know that in driving cars or trucks, it is not advised for you to ever have your vehicle "free wheeling" what essentially pulling the clutch in is. I've always had a manual and used the engine (downshifting) to aid in slowing down the engine from cars to big rigs.

I understand that the AIS system also has an affect on the popping. I have the kit but have not installed it yet. I am curious as to why you should not down shift. I can feel the rev limiting kick in every so often. I am also going to add a power commander or Dyna to change the rev limits. Every vehicle I ever owned with standard transmission allowed the downshifts. Is there something different with the V Twin that may cause harm? Just Curious
