I know, it's been beat to death 3 Years ago
So I emailed Mobile One about useing their 75w90 gear oil in a roadstar transfer case. This was their reply:
"No, this would not be an appropriate product." I don't want to void my warranty. Has anyone ever had a different response from say a yamaha source?

If it's rated for GL4 or backwards compatible to GL4 use it. Don't get analysis paralysis on this kind of thing. You will always be able to find someone that says you can't do it. My .00002 cents anywho.

I agree, if it's good for gl4 and 5 it should be ok. Mobile one seems to use additives that aren't that harsh on yellow metals. From what I have mentally disected about the transfer case, I can't see where any of those metals would be present either way. Mobile one came in second to Amsoil (of course) in the copper corrosion/staining test.

I emailed mobile about it once and their reasoning was because of the additives / yellow metals issue. Lots of Roadies have been running it for lots of miles with no problems. So it must work ok. I haven't heard of anyones transfer case self destructing. I think this is just another case of all the experts know is what the book tells them. They can only speak in generalities and what covers their backsides. I'll stick with real life, real miles proof.

Musky, do you personally use the Mobil 1 75W90?

I've only been using it for 30,000 miles. No issues yet

It is GL5 rated but Mobil says it can be used in GL4 applications as well.

Nope. I run Royal Purple. Another GL5 (backwards compatible) that Roadie owners run with no problems.

Its funny to see new guys to the site timidly ask questions about oil. I think we've finally put the fear of God into people about oil & tire questions. Still working on the helmut rights questions tho!
