I'm not sure why dealers set them up too rich, but I suspect they have done it again.
They do it to cover their butt. They don't want to be blamed for burned pitons and scored walls.

Just posted fuel mileage check #8 in the first post of this thread. It will be my last entry and I am sure you are all glad of that. Anyway, I had my best mileage yet at 42 MPG.
Interesting ... thanks for taking the time to do this.
I'd be interested in seeing you posting a result at 10,000.
Your results suggest the FI model is set up slightly rich.

Yeah, I said it was my last post, but I will post more. Just not every tank like before. It looks like it has leveled out around 40 MPG. I will do more. What I really want to do is fill up and ride the highway until it is on empty. That is one thing I have not done yet. Most of the longer runs are broken up with fuel/stretch stops before I reach empty. I don't dare not fill up when everyone else stops because I may find myself on E before the next stop. Stayed more to come.

my 1800cc fuel injected V-twin gets 23MPG in city stop & go traffic. this means starting cold bike, riding two miles, stopping at red lights, and shutting down. when riding hwy, mileage improves. i chuckle when people post how many miles they ride before the low fuel light comes on since we don't know how many gallons they've bought. mine's a honda 1800.

After the 09 Daytona bike week traffic...R* started running rich with burps from carb..took it to the shop...Yamaha has a recall on the 1700 due to the ethanol cooking off...fix was to put a longer fuel line in so it stays cooler..

I have about 4K on my '08 now and it consistantly gets 40mpg around town and on the trip to Helen this weekend on the open highway it got about 47-48mpg. Works for me. If gas milage was much of a concern for me I would have gotten a moped!

First I've heard of the recall. Can you get a copy from your dealer and post it?

I would like to comment to all who have posted that MPG is not a concern to them. There have been a couple or more. If you would think it through, MPG is more than it appears. It is an indication of how the engine is running. I am concerned about MPG because it tells me if the fuel mixture is adjusted correctly. If everyone is getting 40 to 50 MPG and I am getting 18 MPG, yes, that is a concern for me. Something is very different there, and I want to know why. As it turns out, it appears my low fuel mileage was due to the fact my bike was new. As mileage increased and it got broken in, fuel mileage increased.

Same thing I have found. My last two bikes were the first "new" bikes I have had in a long time and both got better as they were broke in.

I am consistently getting 45mpg in mixed driving. This includes some sub 50mph, some periods of WOT, 65mph highway. About 7800 mi on it. 2006.
