a few short questions 2 Years, 12 Months ago
Good morning ladies and gents,

I joined just over a week ago and have been lurking for a month since I bought my 2000 roadstar. It had 38k miles on it and $4700 in mods. The first and only owner kept all the receipts and I got it with a disc with every expense down to gas mileage for trips on a dvd. I could not believe it. I have a goldwing, a Valk and a Vstar, but my cycle supply shop know me well and when a deal comes in, they always give me first chance at it.

So this has a rev master on it, yet I find myself hitting the limiter in first. Is there away I can check to see if it is working? I leave 1st as soon as I can but sometimes you have to be quick off the line to get the good position in traffic. Any ideas?
Now, my two flat sixes are 300k mile engines, I baby my engines and only use the best synthetic oils, I clean my bike weekly if not more as it represent the closest look most folks will take of their bike. This has saved me many headache, and and I always have a clean ride. I did a search on octane and what to you, but nothing directly related came up, so, is it my imagination that I am getting better gas millage with the supreme gas. I have ran tank on all grades and get about 15 more miles before reserve on supreme. Any thoughts, opine away.

Lastly, I have the K&N airflow system with Vance and Hines. It seems to be tuned really well. I would like to hear the sound with the baffles out. Has anybody heard this. I say this because this will, when finished building it up, be my bike show bike for the year. Last year the Valk brought huge numbers because no one has seen on like that. This year, I have a see of chrome and a V-Twin so I will be like the other 12000 bikes there. I thought with the baffles out for the show, it would bring more folks to me booth.

Sorry for the long post but feel lucky, I have over five thousand post on one other forum and about 4000 on another , and I still managed to ride 45k miles a year.

Cheers and great site.

Most of us use 87 octane to avoid carbon build up.Do you have Hc pistons.

Lots of threads discussing fuel octane.

In short .... you usually need higher octane, slow burning fuel in HC engines to prevent pre-detonation and the resulting knock. Our low compression engines need a quick burning fuel and 87 does the trick nicely.

I don't get why everyone says you should run regular gas. I've always ran premium. Carbon buildup? I thought premium gas is supposed to keep your engine cleaner? I've got 30k on mine with nothing but good performance with premium. In fact, the few times I did run regular to save a few pennys I could tell the difference. The throttle just didn't feel as responsive. Mines an 06, all stock.

Like our oil discussions, octane discussions are numerous so if you are interested I encourage you to check out some of the older threads.

BUT ..... If you are happy and your bike runs better on higher octane then you should continue to do what your now doing.

I am aware of the HC vs LC formulations. I don't think i see a huge difference in performance other then the gas thing. I was just wondering. However, every 5k mile i change the oil and run a bottle of gummout with REGAIN total fuel system cleaner. The important word being REGAIN. This is the formula that actually does something for you, vs the stuff that is just gunk. I used to build up turbo engines in audis and my mechanic, who is a race driver and mechanic for Porches USA told me about it. My last A4 had an article written about it in audizine and the fiber scoped the engine and it was clean as new. This car had 90k+ on it.
