Exhaust Discoloration 2 Years, 11 Months ago
On my 2007 R*, my bottom exhaust pipe has got a patch of bluish rusty discoloration where the small pipe joins the muffler. Anybody else seen this? It almost looks like hot gases are leaking out of the joint.

Recently I pulled the exhaust system off my '07 and noticed the same, including the rest of the pipe under the heat shield a gold color. My bike is totally stock but I've suspected since new it was running a bit on the lean side, but overall it runs well without excessive popping and so far, no puking. The plugs look fine at 2.5k. It could be they got a little skimpy on the plating process too. I'm not worried, I've had other yammies do the same thing without any long term problems.

my 01 RS had same thing. Was told when aftermarket pipes are installed and you do not re-ject the carb that will happen. I used some chrome polish on mine, it basically disappeared... but appears to have come back somewhat. Ahh.. I got use to it.

The Yamaha pipes under the heat shield turn colors on all of the bikes. I took mine off and replaced them with V & H and the stock pipes had only 600 miles and they had turned gold and blue under the heat shields already. It is a pretty normal condition. You will see it most at joints and bends where they get the hottest. If you have a place where the heat shield is turning colors at a joint I would check to make sure that joint was sealed and tightened properly.

Seems they both were turning gold and blue Coug The front turning more than the rear cylinder.
