So far the A.M.A., A.B.A.T.E., and the New York Freedom Riders are aware of it and have been active trying to stop them.
I think it will take a lawsuit to end it though.
Here's a quote from the Freedom Riders press release.
These motorcycle only checkpoints target a particular group of individuals which has been determined to be unconstitutional. The Supreme Court of the United States of America has repeated held that “the citizen who has given no good cause for believing he is engaged in (criminal) activity is entitled to proceed on his way without interference” Bandrinegar, supra; see also Terry v. Ohio, supra.
Americade may be interesting enough for me to stop at this year.
The State Police have a booth set up explaining why these checkpoints are for our safety.
I'm sure that will go over well with everyone who got tickets for loud pipes.

I believe the cops are merely a pawn for the govt agency that's making them do this. In that respect, I feel sorry for the poor guys who have to work the booth and explain to everyone about how this is good for them. All the while knowing in their own heads this is a load of crap.

I agree 100%
I think some will believe the line, some will just except it as 'doing what their told' but most will know it's a load of crap.

And yes it is the whole state with special attention on Americade and the Harley Rendezvous (sp?).

Darn I was thinking of riding up to Vt to see my Grandkids this summer. I would have to go across the troughway and right in downtown Troy to get on Highway 7. I also have a hard time keeping my mouth shut when I feel I am being wronged. LEO or not. So maybe I better forget the trip. I hate riding 4 wheels

I wouldn't worry about it to much Bob.
It's not so much single riders they are targeting but groups I think.
If you do decide to ride to Vermont let me know. We could meet up in Troy if I'm not working and I could show you a nicer route into Vermont that will bring you to route 7 only in Bennington.

I just came home from Americade, got back to Ont. Canada about 7pm last nite, rained for about 4hrs,Navives blocked Cornwall crossing, had to go to Ogdensburg. The event was good and the weather co-operated but thr NYP were on alot of bikers only. They even had a check point for motorcycles only checking all papers and mods from what everyone was saying. I was buzzing around everywhere and just missed them, they are definetly discriminating against bikers and alot of the local buzz was that quite a few people voiced theirdiscontent and won't bother going back next year.I did like the show and loved the countryside.
Thats my speel !

That's too bad. These shows and musters are good for the local economy. I too wouldn't go back if I was treated like that. There's just to many other good places to muster and ride. All the LEO's are doing is causing revenue to leave the area.

You would think if they reaaly were concerned with the saftey of motorcyclists they would send all cagers back to driver's ed for a refresher course on keeping their heads out in the fresh air & sunshine.

I went up to Americade Saturday.
I'm about 70 miles south of Lake George and we took the back roads up.
I didn't see any of the checkpoints, but again we did all back roads.
Saw one biker getting a ticket in the village and that was it.
I didn't hear anything on the local news about the checkpoints for Americade, in fact the only mention of Americade was about how happy all the business owners where over all the bikers spending lots of money all week.
Lake George is a seasonal summer village.
With Americade being the biggest event they have, if they have a smaller crowd next year because of the checkpoints you know they'll be screaming real loud.

To "Tom M": Sorry I didn't get in on this discussion a little earlier, but please let me make one observation.....In an earlier statement, you said you drove through a checkpoint without stopping. And if I remember correctly, you drove BACK through it later the same way. While I support everyone's right to freedom from profiling and improper/illegal actions by any police officer, I can't agree with that type of disregard for other's safety. I lost my best friend at a DUI roadside check when a young gang banger (High on alcohol and dope) decided not to stop, and ran over the officer. He was 6 months from retirement, left a wife and two children, just because the driver felt it was his "right" not to stop. Too many people believe they have sole ownership of their rights at other people's expense. I don't believe you are that type of person, and you are just letting off a little steam on a very controversial subject, so please don't take offense. Hell you can't be too bad, you have a star!
Anyway, be careful, have fun, and try not to make a cop's job any harder than it already is......He didn't write the law, he just has to enforce it.

I believe you misread him. i assumed he drove on 4 wheels through a motorcycle only checkpoint.

if you dont stop your bike at a road block for motorcycles they will (should) come after you.
