No, I don't mean that! I'm talking about when we're riding.

My GF took the MSF beginning rider course last fall, and bought herself a 2007 650 VStar. She is very nervous about the upcoming (eventually!!! ) riding season, so I thought being able to talk to her while we're riding would help. I've shopped around quite a bit, and realize there are lots of options for bike2bike communications. However, I'm not willing to spend several hundred dollars for J&M or Chatterbox systems. What I've come up with, to be functional and reletively inexpensive, is to purchase a pair of FRS/GMRS radios, and a pair of Firefox throat mics to fit them (with handlebar mounted PTT). Not bulky, easy to hook up, and can be tossed into the saddlebags when we're not using them.

My question to you folks is; does anyone here have experience with bike2bike comm., and what recommendations do you have?

I realize being able to talk to her may be a distraction to her, but she has mentioned several times that she'd like to be able to ask me questions and get some coaching from me when she's on the road.

Let me know your thoughts and ideas, and THANKS!

I tried nady products. Garbage. Even worse if you have pipes , as they are sound activated. 2 cents,BB.

Hey RR,

Over the winter I got one of the chatterbox models you mentioned, I think it is the FRS one. My buddy I ride with also got one, and the few time we have been out, it has worked well. No more waiting for red lights, and we canwarn eachother about upcoming hazards. The only problem with these is at highway speeds (+70 MPH), it get very hard to hear each other. But other than that, I love it. Hope this helps.

Thanks BB! I've had experience with throat mics before, that's why I'm thinking they'd be best for this application. My HKs are quite loud and throat mics work very well at keeping background noise out.

The main turn off for me on the chatterbox models is the price. Most models were in excess of $200 each! Can't bring myself to spend that much on something just so we can talk. That's taking away from my Chrome $$$ and we just can't have that!!!

Thanks pman!

Just my 2 cents.....

The Chatterbox systems are CRAP! They don't work as intended and are extremely hard to get set up right. Plus, the sound quality is sub-par.

I use an Autocom ( www.autocomamerica.com/ ) with a GMRS/FRS radio connected. The Autocom is voice actuated ( VOX ) so its totally hands free. Audio quality is as good as your stereo system. NO wind noise, at any speed. ( Rated to 180mph ) You can also connect a MP3 player to it so you can listen to music while you ride, and connect your cell phone also. It also has a intercom feature that allows you to talk to your passenger while you ride.

Is it cheap? No.....

Is it worth the money? I think it is. It does what it says and it WORKS!

Remember... you get what you pay for......!
