instability/twitchy feeling at highway speeds 2 Years, 7 Months ago
All, I am looking for some insight and experience here, please offer you suggestions.

When I brought my new 2007 Road Star Silverado home, I experienced a "twitchy/wandering" feeling at a displayed 55-60 mph. I thought the bags and the windscreen may have just been pushing the bike around more than my old bike (12 years ago) with no bags or windscreen... As I did more homework and after a ride with the wife along, I discovered that the dealership set my tire pressure to 36 front, 36 rear and the rear shock preload was set to the minimum. These settings are appropriate for 150lb rider, but I'm 225 and the wife adds 110...

So, I set the tire pressure to 36 front and 41 rear (please confirm this is correct) and set the reaer shock preload to max. This helped around town, up to 55mph solo and with the wife significantly!!! But when alone I got up to a displayed 65 mph and I still start to get that twitchy/wandering sensation again. I don't want to invest in an upgraded 1000lb rear spring, and/or upgraded shock if that is not the prime suspect (or if there are less expensive adjustments I can rule out first)!

My bike is a 2007, but brand new, 0 miles, no fluids until I took delivery at the dealership.

Please let me know your suggestions.

Thank You,

CSnakes

This bike has a long wheel base which adds to the stability at highway speeds. My guess is what you are noticeing is the windscreen which if there is any wind will feel like you have a wobble. You might try putting the front tire up to 40 psi and ride it for awhile till you get some miles on her. Mine likes to wander sometimes and I have the windscreen and lowers. Barring anything being loose I can't see the steering head bearings or wheel bearings being bad...But I have been wrong before. Hope this helps and I'm sure you'll get lots of other opinions too.

I think Greysnake is on to something, a lot of folks express a buffeting from the windscreen...........not specific to the R*...

Thanks fellas, So you think 40 psi front and 41 psi rear is worth a shot?

I only have 350 miles on the bike, so I'm still figuring her out. I may try taking off the windscreen and take a spin as well. I was seeing the neck bearing tightness issue as a possibility, but it just doesn't feel strange at any other speed. So the pressure on the windscreen may be the ticket.

I was a little disappointed as I was looking forward to a smooth stable highway ride with such a large, long bike. Hopefully I can get it there.

Still open to additional suggestions!

Thanks,

CSnakes

That's the pressure I have always put in mine, and alot of others on hear also. Look at your sidewall and see what is recommended by the manufacturer. And take 'er out and ride

Pull the windscreen off, and give it a shot..I think you will see a difference, a lot of folks use lowers to offset the buffeting..so that may be an option for you if you need the shield...

hang in there. I have a 07 silverado also and it is a great highway scoot. I,ve been riding with windshield awhile so maybe that is why I,m used to it . Even The Harley electroglide will do the same thing, though I believe they tried to change things around in 09 to fix it. At least that is my experience with the HD when around semi etc. Love the 07 r and you will too. Give it a true chance bro and she will perform for ya.:laughride hard....ride safe.....ride forever

Hey CSnakes
Also, don't forget that your new tires are breaking in the first 200-500 miles, depending on what brand you have. It seems like it takes closer to the 500 mile mark on my Dunlops, which are designed more for mileage, than more aggresive riding.

Remember, you haven't rode a bike is years, so some of it might be just getting used to riding again. I keep my tires at 40 F & R. Just relax and if she wants to dance, let her dance a little. She will stay under you. It should feel more stable with the little woman on the back as it lowers the rear and slows the steering a little. Or put a fairing on. Mine seemed to stabilize the bike more at high speed.

BTW, welcome to the clinic!

Paul

CSnakes....are you wearing a jacket when you get this wobble? This may sound like a dumb question but I experienced a wobble that was caused by a loose leather jacket I was wearing. I think the wind was going up my sleeves or it was catching the wind and acting like a kite or wing which caused this unsettleing wobble. Without the jacket everything is smooth. This is just my experience.
