I haven't had a bad knock problem but can tell a difference in high heat, slow riding. Here in north east FL. it gets hot/humid and it wears you and anything mechanical down; thats why I always run 20w-50 and always run high test. I had an outside wedding on 6-20-09 the humature was 108 degrees; but it didn't rain!!

You might try an inverter and plug in a fan to blow on your motor while sitting in the slow traffic! And if you guys think it's hot where your at we hit 116 on Wed afternoon!!!!

How about a 12v computer fan. You can get 'em that move 30 or 40 cfm of air.

I've had the over heated knock also. Once moving thru the air cools back down. Interesting on the higher octane theory I just try to avoid those times of the day if I can.

Re:Summertime Heat 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I try NEVER to ride in rush hour. I have that luxury with what I do. But Wednesday was an exception. It was already 7pm before I even started my journey,so I didn't think traffic would be an issue. But a soccer match between Mexico & Venezuela at the Dome brought every Hispanic person out on the road to get to the match. Compounding the Yankee vs. Braves matchup and that almost spells gridlock.

I did try alternate routes, but fellas, they were ALL blocked. So the Roadie endured the heat while I cooked my thighs. Synthetic oil was of no help since I'm running Mobil 1 V-Twin full syn. now. IF I know I'm gonna be in high heat and bumper to bumper traffic I'll fill up with the higher octane go-juice and see if it has any effect to reduce the ping. Seems that it would to me. I'm hoping an over abundance of carbon isn't causing the pre-ignition since I'm ridding an '04. I'm doing my MMO religiously & praying it's doing something other than just pulling $$ out of my wallet.

Thanks for all the advice and it's nice to know that it's not just my bike that has this happening from time to time.

Land splitting (white-lining) might be a solution where it's legal and the cagers know to expect it. But it isn't legal here in Georgia, so if a frustrated cager doesn't nail you somehow, one of our friendly revenue officers, er-uh Law Enforcement Officers certainly will.

I'm sure the practice is great for some, and maybe I'm just a wuss, but I don't think I'd do it at any speed over 10mph anyway. I'd rather endure some heat and be late than increase my chances of a bust-up.

I must be slipping......I thought white lining was when you got over on the shoulder and found a place to park.......... I can now say I've learned something new today.
