Bobber Project? 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I have a 13 year old son and thought it would be fun to build a bobber out of a cheap street bike and was wanting some advice if one bike is better than another, cheaper parts, more parts availibility, easier to work with.I am not much of a mechanic(know enough to struggle through),I can fabricate and weld,so if I go through with this project I will be looking for advice and ideas as it progresses. My son is all to intersted in video games and I thought this would be a fun and learning experience for both of us.Thanks in advance.

Wow, you really want a good candidate for that project... '70 thru '83 Yamaha 650 verticle twin... hands down!

Cheap. Reliable. Plentiful.

Go for it!!!

650 bobbers are sweet man...i also saw someone build a honda 400 bobber that was awesome too, as long as its chain drive itll be good, but those xs vertical motors look just like triumphs and are hella reliable, itll likely have a kicker too which is a nice touch...i just bought a sportster to bob but its slowly draining me of my money haha so stick with metric

Yup 650 Yamaha is a beauty though I was always partial to the old Honda 450 SOHC. Also vertical twin, cheap and just a bit different.
As a reminder a "true" bobber is a stock bike with as much taken off as possible with front fender removed or bobbed, same at rear. No "chopping" necessary. These days the bobber thing is misconstrued as a particular kind of custom.

Here are pics of a couple of VStar 650's. You can them from $3000-$4000 in good stock form. Probably get under $3k if you looked hard.
