easy outs any better today? 2 Years, 7 Months ago

about 30 years or so I did alot of wrenching on cars and invariably broke bolts. tried to use easy outs but a lot of the time they broke and just made things worse. One of my exhaust bolts broke on my R* and there is nothing protruding. So before I drill and try to use an easy out, I was wondering if they are made any better or is there a better way? Don't know what broke it. I was riding with someone and he noticed the bolt was broken. Suggestions??
