easy outs any better today? 2 Years, 7 Months ago
about 30 years or so I did alot of wrenching on cars and invariably broke bolts. tried to use easy outs but a lot of the time they broke and just made things worse. One of my exhaust bolts broke on my R* and there is nothing protruding. So before I drill and try to use an easy out, I was wondering if they are made any better or is there a better way? Don't know what broke it. I was riding with someone and he noticed the bolt was broken. Suggestions??

G'day Zim.. My experience with tools like easy-outs (stud extractors) is if you buy cheap you're often asking for trouble.

Buy good quality tools and you stand a better chance. Also go real steady with drilling out the center of the broken stud, make sure the drill in dead-center and use a small drill first to set up a pilot hole; then follow up with a drill size / stud extractor as big as the job will permit to improve chances of the remaining stud / thread coming away cleanly.

Emu says...take it steady...don't rush these jobs.

Ditto what EMU said. I've broken my share and was pretty good at getting them out. Steady as she goes, and patience!! Find an auto shop that uses MAC tools and get one from them, they are the best quality you can buy.

thanks guys, I guess its shopping I go. I have a set of Craftsman but I think there quality has gone down hill, so I think I will find a MAC or Snap-On and give it a go.

Hopefully when the bike was built the Yamaha Factory but some type of Anti-seize on the studs. But I doubt it!

DONT use easy outs on steel-into-ally [like your manifold bolt for example] youve only got a 1 in 3 chance it will come out clean
1/lucky me, i drilled it central, and the easy out worked
2/easy out snapped inside the stud, now im in a world of agro..
3/easy out opened-up the stud whilst coming out, threads are now dead..

by far the best way is to get a nut, hold it with molegrips or similar and place the hole of the nut over the end of the broken stud...... now attach the earth-clamp of a mig welder to the molegrips and squirt some amps into the hole of the nut!
this will do 2 things.......
1/give you a nut to attach a socket to [for safe undo-ing]
2/ produce enough heat on te stud to loosen it [sometimes its enough to then undo by hand]
good luck

I would recommend Slow and steady with a left hand drill bit. Start with the smallest one possible and work your way up. stay in the dead center and take your time. Alot of the time this will eleminate the need for an ez out. Take your time . Maybe a little heat and or a good penetrating oil and a few light taps with a hammer and a punch to loosen it up. TAKE YOUR TIME.

Good luck
