Is this noise normal? 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I have a 2001 that I love. No AIS.

I love the sound of big V-twins. My motor sounds like a sewing machine. I like that sound.

The sound that I do not like is the rattling/vibrating/high pitch squeeking sound that I get while on the trottle and generally at cruise speeds. If I let off of the throttle, while at speed, it goes away. It is not the tank. It is not the lights (I do not think).

I thought is was the AIS but that is gone. Note - removing the AIS got rid of the annoying buzzing sound.

The sound seems like it is coming from the front of the motor (where the AIS used to be).

The sound is rather annoying and having to listen to it for hrs on end while cruising down the hwy gets old.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

I do not think it is brakes as the sound goes away if I let off throttle and the sound does not change if I engage my brakes, plus it does not seem like it is coming from that area.

I have 2001 R* and had the same type of irritating vibration. Have been trying to eliminate them all one by one. Do you have a chrome tip on your front fender? Before a test ride,I slid business cards between each chrome tip end and my fender and that was it. Have since put little pieces of rubber behind the chrome and no problems. Hope this helps.

Might be worth a look-see, but try taking the two (nylon?) roller guides out next to the front pulley and try her out. I went with a larger pulley and had to take them out because the belt was spinning them more, so they were squealing and chirping and whirring. As long as the belt's properly aligned, there should be no trouble with the belt spinning off the pulley. Also, If you have a jack, you can jack up the rear and take the bike through the gears to see if that takes care of it.

I've got a similar noise. It sounds to me like square cut gear noise or else noise from the gears driving the cam? It does seem to kick in at a particular rpm in all gears, so that eliminates the belt and most tranny issues.

I had a local R* expert listen to it and he said all of his sounded like that. All ten of them... and he never had a problem with any of them.

You nailed it. Once applying firm downward pressure to the front main light, it went away.
