black smoke after cleaning K&N filter? 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I took a long ride this weekend (bout 700 miles)
Hit a huge wind storm on the way back.
I figured I would clean the K&N after that ride, as there was a lot of sand in the air.
After cleaning it, I started 'er up and have black smoke at high RPM's.
Any suggestion?

You may have over-oiled it.

Did you over oil the filter? Did you let the filter dry after you cleaned it and before you oiled it? I have seen guys over oil the filter and not let it dry out first... then a fouled spark plug or two resulted in what you have described. Also recheck you steps to see if you moved or forgot something. Choke cable ok?

Just a thought. I'm sure a few other will come up with a few ideas too.

XMM said it.
I took it out and there was still moisture on the inside of the filter.
Quick easy fix.
Thanks, guys !
