Bad Gas Mileage 5 Years, 2 Months ago
I just checked my mileage during the last two fill-ups and I'm only getting 30 mpg.

I have Cobra pipes, Twin Velocity breather, ported manifold with DJ 165 main and 37.5 pilot. Piot screw is at 2 1/4 out.

Plugs look good. I don't understand how most are getting close to 40 and up.

Any suggestions?

Post edited by: sjh55, at: 2007/03/28 11:06

30 sounds pretty darn low, during the colder weather I was getting about 38 and now that it's warming up I'm doing about 42-43. I'm stock with the exception of Stage 1 on the exhaust. I don't have an answer for you but it sure sounds like something is off.

37.5 is not a stock pilot.37.5 is the one I got with my Dynojet kit.Dyno jet wants to run you rich. You must have a 1600 Road Star which sounds about right with the Dyno jet 165main .I`m having a brain fart right now and can`t think of what the stock pilot is,but I think it`s a 35.Loose the 37.5 pilot.

My jetting:
06Rd* 1700
195DJ main
Stock pilot
DJ needle at 3
PMS at 3
I average 39 to 43 MPG most of the time

What clip setting do you have for your needle.

Except for the needle, with those setting I can see how you are getting such ow mileage.

Are you sure you are calculating it correctly?
Do you full throttle from red light to red light?
Are you driving with the rpm at 4000 all the time?
Is your choke out or stuck? (that could explain the DJ165 but good plugs)

I`m not as thorough as the Doc with my questions and tend to type my thoughts.
1. Has your milage always been poor or is this recent.
2. 1600 or 1700 engine,Dyno jet or Mykuni jetting kit.
3. Main jet size, pilot size, needle position and pms setting.
4. Exhaust and air cleaner modifications.
5. milage divided by gallons and factions of gallon used equals gas milage.

I just added all this to help anyone else with this type of problem, for you the most specific is question 1.

Every time I jetting (always used stock pilot,35) I went from 42mpg down to 30mpg. So, back to near stock jetting, back to 42mpg. I ride spirited, and I'm a big boy, so..............
EDIT: I used dynojet and barons kits, same results!

Post edited by: Big Bear, at: 2007/03/29 08:43

I`m not too surprized Bear, even with your air box drilled the stock box is restictive, plus the Roadhouse pipes are not wide open, just the right amount
of back pressure.I ride 2up alot and at 70mph and average 39 to 42mpg.so my thoughts it`s your stock air box(even drilled)that stops your jet kit from
working. That stock needle is a log.

Re:Bad Gas Mileage 5 Years, 2 Months ago
Sorry for the lack of information. I think the needle is on the 3rd groove from top. Will have to check that to be sure.

Most of my riding is around town and I would like to see mileage in the high 30's as shown here by members for city riding. I don't go full throttle much at all. I do, however, ride faster than most people I ride with using from 1/3 to 1/2 throttle quite often. I would think my mileage should be better than 30 mpg. I don't know what it was when the bike was stock.

I have a 2006 Roadstar 1700
Dyna 3000 ignition set at 32a (will have to check that too, but pretty sure I went with a conservative setting.)
Twin Velocity air cleaner
Cobra Speester shorts w/baffles
ported intake from Barons
AIS removed

DJ165 main jet
37.5 pilot jet (as instructed by Kuryakyn jetting procedures for Twin Velocity)
needle clip on 3rd groove
PMS about 2 1/4 turns out
moved locking nut on accelerator pump lever and adjusted pump shot for minimal amount necessary

Other mods:
Memphis Shades fat shield
Wind Whippers lower deflectors
Rear brake bracket extended (I cut and welded extension and powder coated black Much more comfortable having use of the full right floorboard)
Driver's backrest (made my own bracket, powder coated it black)
Currently fabbing my own sissy bar to use with stock Yamaha side braces
Installed rear turn signal/running lights kit from No Pork. Really lights up the rear end over stock by having red LED's lit all the time for running and when I brake I can see the vehicle behind me light up in red!

FYI: Regarding powder coating; It works great and is very addictive. I can't wait to fab more stuff for my bike and my drag car so I can do more. The gloss black is great and I'm looking to try candy red soon since my bike is that color.
The finish is really nice and the smoothness can be controlled by how much powder is on the piece. I actually added more powder to a piece that just came out of the oven that was showing a little orange peel and just like paint, it flowed out smoothly as I was spraying since the part was already hot the powder melted on contact. It's a lot of fun and very durable.
Downside: The chrome does not look like chrome (pretty much knew that, but hoped it would be better than it is) It is a very shiny silver, but not chrome. I'll add some pics shortly.

With the carb settings you have I don't see why you are getting such poor mileage.

If anything, except for the pilot, you're on the lean side. And the pilot would not affect the mileage that much.

The Dyna setting is OK.

Doesn't sound like you're aggressive on the throttle.

Gas leak, inaccurate mileage calculation, bad gas ?????

Re:Bad Gas Mileage 5 Years, 2 Months ago
I suppose I'll go back to the stock 35 pilot jet and see how that works. Sucks losing 12 mpg or more after doing the upgrades. Seems like going way down in main jet would give better mileage, but guess that only applies to WOT.

I may try dropping the needle down one groove too to help 1/3 throttle (cruising).

I haven't found the right pipe size to fab a piece I need so I can use my Innovate analyzer to check air/fuel ratios. With the stock adapter stuck into the end of the exhaust only 6", the oxygen sensor is getting hit with fresh air that's sucked back into the end of the exhaust with the V-twin pulsing so strongly and the reading are way too lean (reading exceeds the 22:1 max air/fuel ratio on the readout) Innovate recommends fabbing a piece of pipe with a bung near the front end that will slip snugly inside my exhaust and extend 18" past the bung (end of my exhaust) so fresh air can't be drawn back around the sensor. I'll post the results as soon as I get this piece made.
