Ken regularly posts on the RSR forum. Find one of his posts and e-mail him direct.

I think his shim solution addresses generator end play "knock", but I also think some "knock" can be caused by lean conditions, escpecially at low rpm/high load.

A motor approaching/hitting detonation can not only rattle valves (pinging), but really shake motor internals IMHO.

A quick test is to "hold" the rpm/load conditions and pull the choke a little next time you hear it. If it goes away, whichever circuit you're carb is working is probably lean or timing could be off.

I fixed my knock with a set of Hard Krome 3" Dual Side Burners. Put the stock pipes on and it came back ... I think it must be pipe related.

Post edited by: CRASH, at: 2005/04/21 12:03

Re:road star knock 7 Years, 1 Month ago
Just talked to Yamaha Corp. in California.Told them about the knock getting louder in my 2004 Silverado. It is now so loud that my buddy riding beside me on a 1200 sportster with screaming eagle straight pipes asked me what that noise was.Yamaha corporate told me to go back to the dealer and tell them my problem again, last time in they said the noise was normal and the all do it.Now I am not real mechanical but I dont believe that my engine should be heard over the roar of two big bikes at 70 miles an hour.I really love this bike but am having a rotten time trying to get some satisfaction.Has anyone else had any luck getting anywhere with Yamaha or their local dealer on this matter?

I have the 04 Silverado knock. I have read about everything concerning the cause. I don't agree that it is a shim problem relating to the generator shaft. I believe that the knock is definitely in the cylinder. The reasons are, the knock is absent until the motor is warmed up. The knock occurs during power/on throttle, but subsides when backing off. I have some experience with engines and this knock sound like a wrist pin, rod bearing, or piston slap. An independent cycle mechanic agreed that it sounds like a piston slap. I haven't called Yamaha, but will be doing so. If I don't get the right answers from yamaha I am willing to go public in a big way. Any one out there willing to join in?

I'm back and I have a thought. Would those of you 04 R* owners with "THE KNOCK" be willing to send /e-mail me the Vin# and date of Manufacture of your scoots. I want to see if there is a pattern before I call Yamaha. The more info I have the better to COMMUNICATE.

Hey Guys. My 04 doesn't knock at least not so far. Have you guys had the issue since day 1 o did it show up after time? The reason I ask is I had the carb cough problem since new and got the same story from Yamaha and had to take legal action. Just wondering if they all start to knock eventually or is it isolated. Good luck and hope you guys get satifaction from Yamaha.
