Any ideas on a flag holder for the Road* ?? 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Going on a Memorial Ride this weekend, and they want all the bikes to display a flag. Any ideas on a makeshift flag holder that would not damage the bike itself? Something I do not think I would use much but want to come up with something.

Zip ties to the rear suspension arms (can't think of the correct name, but the part that ends at the rear shaft. complete brain shutdown). I have a rig that uses u-bolts to the passenger backrest, but you aren't using a backrest. That and I fly a 3'x5'. If you use pvc or wood, you can drill a hole through it and run the zip tie through the pole so that it can't slide down. Hope that can help, or at least give someone a thought to run with.

I have seen PVC pipe zip tied on bikes. Also U-bolts used to install PVC pipe.

Doubt you could have it made in time for this weekend's run, but given your setup the simplest solution would be to have a local machine shop make you a stainless steel or aluminum post with a screw-on topper/stop that will thread into the rearmost hole for the passenger pillon. This is assuming you're looking at a small flag and not a large 3'x5' one of course.

I made a cheap, quick one for when I do my PGR rides. I took a foot long section of sch.40 pvc pipe, put a cap on one end, and hose clamped and zip tied it to my sissy bar. It slips down between my saddle bag and frame. I drilled holes in the pvc and the 3 piece flag pole I bought at Wal-Mart and put stays in the pole. I fly a 3x5 flag with no problems. Paint the pvc black, it looks better!

Actually, the more I think about it...

Do you have a metric tap & die set? IIRC that rear pillion bolt is an 8mm, and 8mm converts to 0.3149". That said, you could probably get some 5/16" (0.3125" aluminum rod and thread one end of it with the appropriate die to thread into the fender/sub-fender. To keep it from rotating/vibrating loose you could just thread a nut onto it as a stopper and red loc-tite it (the nut) in place. This would also give you something to torque it down a little.

Threading the top and using an acorn nut could be used as a topper/stop to secure the flag as well.

Just be sure to use a nylon washer between the nut and your fender to protect the paint.

I have also seen guys bolt a plate to their luggage rack and have pole holders on the plate. Quick install and removal.

I have done that and it works great. 2 pieces of wood with 4 bolts and wing nuts. I also found a metal plate that you can screw a 3/4 metal pole into that works well.
