OK. If the dealer is using it as a reason I definetly need to keep searching for the truth. This same problem happens during the summer and fall. Don't think we're running winter gas all the time. The search continues.

Re:Pumpless puking 5 Years, 2 Months ago
I went up in flames at star days last year... but there was a few factors involved... 1. it was hot... damn hot 2. I was running very hard 3. my front head pipe was broken where it enters the muffler (unknown to me) this was making the front cylender run very lean (noticed it at WOT going accross Missouri - didn't think it was so bad I needed to adjust on the road) 4. I was coming down out of the mountains (thin air cools less and temps go up as you go down) 5. I run my bike on the cusp of being to lean (no wiggle room for the cracked pipe)

I had stopped for gas and noticed the bike was running HOT... so we let it cool for 15 to 20 minutes... not enough... puked fuel out and stalled the bike (I didn't know) ... I hit the starter and it back fired... gas on hot pipe vaporized the fuel and it all caught I was about 10 seconds from a national news gas station fire... thankfully I got it put out before it got to big (I don't know what to big is... but I had flames over the top of the tank.. and sent some lady screaming from the gas station)... long story short... trailered back to Ohio... drove a car back =( only real damage was the wiring harness for the carb heater repairs done and my bike gets a new nickname "Christine" ~Guido

The winter gas answer does not work for me in that the first occurance for me was in July! It happened more in the summer when it was hot than it does during winter when it is cool. In Florida I am not sure we ever get "winter gas" as temperatures do not fall that low here.

IMHO the heat is raising pressure in the float bowl and the floats are forced down by the pressure. When the fuel pump is activated it pumps fuel like it is supposed to, but the floats do not rise and shut off the flow. I have never just let it run to see if the fuel stops as soon as I see puking or get the no start from the engine I shut down and turn off the fuel to minimize the flow. This is dangerous and I need to at least get on record with the dealer about this issue.

I hope Mama Yama comes up with a solution soon

However it happened to me about 4 weeks ago when it was 40 degrees out after only about 10 miles.

Well,

I am watching this thread with interest. My insurance is paid, but...

I don't think I have had this problem , yet. I would probably see some stains as I ride almost every day since I got the bike in January and don't wash it near as often as I probably should.

I have smelled light gas fumes on occasion, but usually when starting with the choke on.

I do get some fuel ignition pretty regularly in my mufflers, but I have attributed this to still having the air pump installed.

I am beginning to be concerned about opening the air box or anything else that might require JETTING after all the post on this matter.

I am getting about 38 or 39 MPG combined city highway. I romp away wot, lug till it shakes cruise 60 in 5th and 90 in 4th and none of the problems and what I consider OK mpg.

Perhaps you see my quandry, "to change or not to change".

jv

If you're talking about puking gas when the engine is hot? I found that disconnecting the carb heater solved my problem. After soaking my pants leg twice when starting after sitting a short time it hasn't happened again since pulling the plug on the carb heater.

Hey jv

People with 100% stock bikes have had the problem. But don't do anything to your bike just cuz others do. If your happy with it like it is then ride, smile, and don't think twice about it. I'm just playing with a theoty that if we didn't have the pump we wouldn't have the problem. It really isn't based on much. More just something I grabbed out of the air and decided to see where it went.

Hot Carburetor + Gas = Boiling gas
Boiling gas = sinking floats
Sinking floats = overflowing carburetor bowl = PUKE TIME for Roadie!.

Gasoline has a lower boiling point than water, much lower.
Gasoline is also lighter than water. But boiling gasoline is lighter than
boiling water.
Boiling gasoline is so light that it causes the floats in the carb to sink, thus allowing more and more fuel to enter the carb. Once the older gas is puked out, the newer gas gets let in and starts to boil and it lets the floats sink again, you get gas vapor and liquid puking out all over, and the cycle repeats itself.
Does this theory make sense?
Oh, and the higher the butane content in the gas, the lower the boiling point.(Butane boils at Freeze piont of water.) Ethanol content has an effect on gasolines boiling properties to.

Post edited by: StarMyram, at: 2007/03/29 20:54
