Back From the Trace 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Hi!

We just returned from a 1780 mile trip south. Rode the Natchez Trace from Nashville TN to Natchez MS... over 400 miles of rural quiet two lane without a stop sign. Came back up though the delta land and past Elvis' house; had some great bbq just outside Memphis and also rode the Land Between the Lakes Trace in Tn and Ky on our way home.

The Delta land was interesting... and could be somewhat boring except for the regular jolting reminders of being in the deep south... grinding poverty along with huge seemingly endless fields of cotton, peanuts, and other row crops... and the ever present... did I mention... poverty. Since I have a deep and abiding love for all things agriculture - having worked in it for many years I found the delta country very interesting.

Stopped at the famous Loveless restaurant on Monday just before entering the Trace; actually I had forgotten that me and a friend had drove a long way to eat there while at Gottletsville TN for a ministry conference back one time and we were so disappointed in the food. This place was packed out then - and when Kathy and I stopped Monday also. We didn't eat; just looked at the memorabilia.

We had a sheriff at Elvis' gift shop in Memphis tell us to stop at Bozos in Mason for the best bbq in Tn and so we did. That place was full of old time charm - and right out of the history books. Great food and really old time charm; nothing but a few old locals eating when we stopped and I just couldn't get over how it was like going back in time.

Rode to Land Between the Lakes on the way home and rode that Trace... just over 40 miles of beauty... great!

At 6 pm Thursday evening as we filled up at the North end of LBL - after riding from Clarksdale MS, an hour south of Memphis on 61, we decided to head for home and rode over 400 miles... getting home at 1 am. Had a great ride up 56 to Owensboro and a wonderful sunset over the Ohio river on the 231 bridge... then the grinding work of interstate over to New Albany and up 65 home. Would have taken the back roads to 37 and up 446 Bloomington and Nashville backroads... but the fog was unsettling and with the cold and darkness setting in and the deer situation I thought the interstate would be a less formidable foe.

Great ride though; only had one day of rain but I got dry after a while.

Gotta tell ya... those Ultimate seats... worth the money; we averaged over 445 miles per day. And I have to say, my wife is a real trouper... never complained a minute... what a wonderful companion.

Good job LC I enjoyed the walk trough of your trip. Maybe I need to get this thing paid for so I can get a good seat. I,d like to take a long trip but as is can only do about 100 miles then give my back a rest. way to go man.

the Natchez trace sounds like a really great ride...I am completely unfamiliar with that territory. how did you come up with your itinerary?

Hi Blackhorse,

We asked for advise on sights to see and things to do here of course; we also looked at maps and articles concerning the Natchez Trace and any points of interest by "googling" them.

We took the time to meander along with stops whenever we saw something that interested us. They have free maps at interstate welcome stops in TN as well as along the Trace that will give you more info than you might want.

I asked questions along the way and if the answers were interesting to us we made the decision to go or not to at that moment.

The basic thing we did though was simply ride and let the trip play itself out as we rode along.
