Excessive Belt Noise Quick Fix 5 Years, 1 Month ago
G'Day Guys,
Just searching for a quick fix for my excessive belt noise. Can I spray WD40 on the belt to quiten the noise,or maybe there is a belt grip spray you know of? I have used soap with a little success. I have checked the wheel alignment, rubbing etc for problems but put it down to maybe needing replacement (2001 R* 55000kms). I am too poor at the moment so I just want it to last a bit longer. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers, Aussie Spiro

What kind of noise?

WD40 is not really a lubricant. If you want to make the belt quieter you could try spraying silicone on it.

On the other hand, do you want a slick belt.

Thanks for the reply Doc. I was thinking of silicone as well but wasn't sure of it being to slick. I only thought of WD40 as I saw it advertised on there site as quitening belt noise. Not sure of the sound but I have noticed the belt is not quite centralised on the pulley by a couple of millimetres. No signs of wear though on the edge of the belt. The boys say it is quite loud when riding beside me and sounds like a rubbing sound. Soap does work when applied to the edges, but very hard to apply. Doesn't appear to effect performance at all though. Just aggravating!
By the way love your ride Doc.......maybe one day. You guys in the States are very lucky when it comes to buying parts as over here in Oz it is very very expensive to customise your bike. Chrome and paint is also over the top as well and registration is a joke, more expensive than a car in New South Wales where I am currently living with the family. I have been posted all over Oz with the military and this state is the worst at around $600 to register your bike. At my last posting in Western Australia it was $220. Anyway I'm dribbling.

Is it making a whirring sound?

If so your belt is too tight. Trying backing off the adjustments bolts 1/4 turn.

If it's just the sound the the belt rubbing against the side of the pulley, then tighten the same side as the belt is on. That is, if it rubbing on the left side of the pulley, tighten the left adjuster.

Loosen the belt.

If the belt is too tight you're going to trash your front pulley bearings.
