GOTCHA!
You opened this post thinking it was going to be another OIL DEBATE, didn't you?
It's only a question for whoever has an opinion who can answer it.
I have a friend that has been using Quaker State (yuck!) automotive oil 10w40 grade with an "SL" classification in his V-Twin. (No "Energy Conserving" noted on the API donut on bottle.) It's not JASO-MA either.
Is there any chance he has caused damage to the bike's transmission as far as you are concerned? He's had no clutch touble, but Pop Rivet was concerned about shear stablility for gears in a previous discussion. What do you think Doc, Musky, Pop?

I only know what I read on the Internet .... which either seems to be conflicting info or is written by interested parties.

Oil seems to have changed after the SJ classification. Different weights and brands seem to be formulated differently.

I have a lot of old synthetic oil to use up so I haven't concerned myself but maybe I'll start doing some serious reading to try and make heads or tails out of it.

In the end I think it might be difficult as the oil companies seem to keep the info in their pockets.

Yeah Kinda what I thought too Doc. Too much "hidden" variables.
Oil is kinda like politics and religion.
You stick with your Mobil 1 red cap, and I'll stick with my Amsoil V-Twin. And my buddy can continue to use his Quaker State car oil.
We'll see when and "IF" any of us has problems because of it.
We're all probably fine.

Did I ever mention to you that our local HomeHardware out here
still sells Mobil 1 Red Cap?

Worked for a few years at an auto shop, pulled more than my fair share of valve covers off cars to see the wonderful results of Qauker state oil. Plugs up return galleys on s/b chevys and others like nobodys business. Was common for cars whoses owners "swore" by QS oil to have 1-2 quarts trapped under those valve covers. The stuff isn't welcomed in my garage, wouldn't even put it in the lawnmower.

Yup. I agree, QS sucks! I have seen many engines never use oil until some stupid arse put QS in it. Then it used oil. When the motor was hot, you could pull the dipstick and the QS would run right off the end. Never seen any other oil do that.
Only think I ever use QS for is to fire up a rebuilt engine for 20 minutes to break-in the cam, and then dump the QS and oil filter that are all plugged and full of Lubriplate assembly grease. Wont use QS for anything else. (I also don't like the GREEN bottles QS comes in. ...Weedspray and lawn fertilizer comes in GREEN jugs!)
