No... Road Star was born in 1994..
In 1994 Yamaha announced the creation of Star Motorcycles, a new standalone brand name for its cruiser series of motorcycles in the American market. Although a separate brand, Star motorcycles will continue to be sold at Yamaha dealerships. In other markets the same bikes will be still sold as Yamahas.
A RD 250 was not a Road Star in 1974 ...no Star logo anywhere...

Man, that brings back memories! I had a 70 something RD350 that my dad brought home one day when I was a kid. It was the exact same bike in maroon with the 350 twin cylinder. That was the "big" bike that I learned to ride street on. It had the same dash panel with those cheezy turn signal indicators on it. Wish I had it back now.

That does bring back memories. I had a sixties something 305cc yamaha and later on I bought an RD400 that I converted in to a roadrace bike and raced on the WERA circuit for awhile. One of the first 6 speed bikes around. If I remember correctly Yamaha won two Daytona 200s with the RD350 back when that was the biggest bike they made. they were not near as fast as the 750s they raced against but they sure did handle and they sure were reliable. then of course the came out with the TZ700 and dominated for quite awhile with Kenny Roberts as their 'big gun'.

In the Army in '73, out at Ft. Carson in CO. Two buds each bought new RD 350's. They were quick, and ran real sweet... only problem, they frequently fouled plugs. They had to carry extras with them at all times!
So I bought a used '72 650 vertical twin! The famous red and white painted one... rode it across the country 3 times! Was I a crazy kid or what?!?!?

According to Yamaha's timeline...Star wasn't introduced until 1996 with the 1300 Royal Star and the Road Star didn't appear until 1999.
