NEW BIKE HELP 5 Years, 1 Month ago
My wife and i just bought a new 06 midnight road star 1700 this bike had no miles on it when we picked it up from the dealer we love this bike but i have been doing some reading on here now that we have one and i am finding out a lot about it that scares me like the sticky valves and the to much oil and the carb back firing. the back firing is why i stared looking around on here to see if it was something that i was doing or not i told the dealer but they said that it was not warmed up all the way before i take off the chock but after we ride for a 100 miles it will still do it from time to time i know i am not the sharpest knife in the box but i would thing buy then its plenty warmed up. did we make a bad choices in getting this bike we wont a bike that we can get on too and ride we put around 10 thousands mile on our bike a year is that something that we can do with this bike any help would be great thanks guys

Congrats on the new scoot . If you are talking bout the pop when you blip the throttle , It's a R* thing . There are many discussions in here about this . Adj. the accelerator pump can help . If it is an out and out back-fire check for an exhaust leak . you might be sucking air . Yamaha recomends warming the bike up and checking the pipe to head bolts , may need tightened . even the muffler clamps may need tweeked . mine did it after I put the pipes on and low and behold I had a loose clamp . Good luck .

Welcome to the Clinic

You would be hard presed to find a bike that doesn't have any isssues. Don't sweat the Sticky valves. A very small percentage of Roadies get it. The oil is no biggie. Just don't put in more than 4 qts when you do a change. As for the carb backfire, when does it do it? Are you blipping the throttle at red lights? At a steady speed? On decel?

Don't follow the shift points in the owners manual. They are way to low. The Roadies hate to be lugged. They love revs.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/04/02 06:54

I`ve had mine a year and four months now,10,800 miles as of this weekend.
No problems,I`m hoping to get 100,000 out of the engine.I`d suggest going
to a synthetic oil after the break in tho. Welcome to the Clinic!!

Welcome 06. One thing that I've found is that once i crank, and if the bike is not already warm, I just start riding w/ the choke out, which eliminates the hiccup almost completely when cold. I think the set of Cobra lowboys I put on helped out a bit as well. Definitely change to synthetic oil after breakin (just don't ask which brand), as I've not heard a peep out of the engine since doing so. Personally, I wouldn't trade this bike for ANYTHING. It is the most comfortable/thrilling/beautiful/etc./etc. bike out today in my humble opinion. Never regreted the purchase.
