Time for another set of tires & suggestion time 3 Months ago
Just finished a four day ride from four corners area up to Hulett Wyo, over to Deadwood SD. Got chased out of SD by heavy thunderstorms going all the way south into Nebraska. Rode back down the CanAm Highway south down to Torrington Wyo. cut through Scottsbluff over to Kearney Nebraska. Then I headed South into Kansas to see a family member around the Salina Kansas Area. Ran into more rain there. Went from there west across I70 to Limon Colorado, down to Colorado Springs, got rained on and hailed on. Then south to Albequerque, and over to Flagstaff, where I am now, and going to rest my bottomside for a couple days.

The back tire is baby butt smooth, which is a Metzler Me880 marathon, and the front Metzler Me880 is looking time to change the skins again. I don't think I am going to get another 100 miles out of these two safely.

I will have to order the Metz's if I want to go back with those, and probably continentals also. Would the Harley 401's fit the Roadie, or should I look at the Metz's

You'll get a lot of opinions on that question Have you ever looked at the Dunlop Cruisemax or Avon venoms? I've had two sets of cruisemax's and was well pleased. I put the venoms on last January to try them. So far so good. My.03 cents anywho.

I had a bad Avon rear lasted like 7K miles and started to crack at the rim. I was 1st everyone else got a warranty free tire. So I put another Good Avon Rear on and got over 10K miles on it and the front looks like it will go 20K, Quiet and better in rain than any stock tire. Year round rider, scraping the floorboards and exhaust two up, fully loaded and tires pumped up to about Max Pressure.

I like em, but I'm too rough on tires, I'm going to the Dark side.

We have a set of Venom's on our Triumph Bonneville also. Just replaced them as a matter of fact. They hug the road really well, and got about 13,000 out of the last set. I was more worried about the weight of the Roadie being about so much heavier than the ummmfff. The Triumph outdoes the roadie though in the switchbacks of Hwy 550 going over Silverton Durango. Leaves me using the power of the Roadstar to catch up in the straight aways. Of course it weighs a lot less.

Will look at the Cruisemax's though. I was wondering about the Harley brand Dunlops because the 08 Road King Harley we got about 15,000 out of the back tire on it, and just had it replaced also.

I am curious about these new michelin tires that cyclegear.com has that are suppose to have a kevlar incorperated in them. Anyone had any experience with these?

I love the Dunlop Cruisemax tires and have heard great things about the Avon Venoms. I tried the Metzeler ME880 on the rear and greatly enjoyed the performance but not the durability (7,500 miles). That's my contribution.

As someone else mentioned, this is one of those areas where each person has their own preference.

That being said, if you don't have a preference for WWWs or your basic black, I highly recommend Dunlop Elite 3's, which are only offered in black. IMO, they are the best handling tires I've ever run. Having said that, I've never run any Metzelers or Avons on any bike I've ever owned, so I don't know how they compare. But compared to other models of Dunlops, Continentals, Bridgestones and Maxxis, the Elite 3's are by far the better tires.

Aaron

AVON Venom. I am on my second rear, got 12,600 out of the last one, the font has 10K on it and looks very good. They are noticebly smoother and quieter than the Stock Bridgestones. They stick in the wet and dry no matter how hard I push them They come in white wall which is important to me. Another thing rarely mentioned is the Venom rear tire has a reinforced sidewall for added load capacity. I love them. Probably can't go wrong with any of them, but I will keep putting the Venoms on as long as I can.

I would also have to go with the Avon Venoms. They feel more stable in the corners to me. They are a little more spendy but I think they are worth it.

Good Thread. I daily commute, I'm an old guy now and don't do any dragging or burnouts, and have the stock bridgestone's on my '07 set at 35F & 40R. Doesn't look like they will see 10k. Was thinking I'd go to Dunlops next but will start looking at Avons now. I live near the Cyclegear in Sacramento. Thanks guys for bringing this topic around again.
