octang? 5 Years, 1 Month ago
i have 550 miles on my 2006 road star. been useing mid grade 87+ up to 400 miles,
but was getting a piston slapping sound. the last tank was premium 93+. no slapping. will higher octang hurt?. 100 more miles and she gets serviced and pipes. any thoughts on the gas?

With the Roadies compression you don't need premium. Try a diferent brand of gas. You might be surprised.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/04/03 19:01

You're not lugging it are you?

Lots of torque down low but you still need to get the revs up a bit.

I agree wih Doc on the gas, and lugging. Different brands are HUGELY different.
I think you might still be able to get a Roadie to ping on 87 octane if you lug it low enough. Don't run her under 50 mph (80 Kph) in 5th gear!
She'll let you know that she doesen't like that kind of lugging in a hurry with the "slapping sound." VERY hard on the pistons and rings.

Octang? Wasn't that a German techno band from the late 90's? Just kidding.

Well if the higher octane is working for you then go with it.

Usually the higher octane is not necessary and does not burn as well in our low compression engines.

Stock engine? No internal mods? Right Valves adjusted?

Could have just been a bad batch of gas. Otherwise, can't think of much besides the timing that would cause the noise but that's controlled by the ignitor box.

Sounds like regular Shell was fine. You got problems when you switched to BP. Go back to regular shell and see how it goes. My 2 cents anywho.
