LOST AIR IN REAR TIRE!!!! 2 Years, 5 Months ago
Had some excitement Sunday afternoon on a Star Touring group ride, actually on the way home from the ride. I was the 3rd bike of 4 riding on a state highway in the middle of Sugar Cane fields east of South Bay Florida. The road is wavy from a lot of heavy truck traffic so the bike was bouncing along when gradually the ups and downs began to go side to side??? I ran the check list - road irregualarities - NO - wind - NO - did I loose a bearing - NO - then I said DARN IT tire going flat - this may seem like a lengthy process, but it was only seconds. I thought to myself as I slowly moved to the shoulder, what little there was, that I was glad it was a rear tire. I let her roll out with only very slight pressure to the front brake to continue to slow her down and pulled to the shoulder. Yep completely flat. Fortunately I was with others for help. A Roadie with a flat does not push easily. We could find no damage to the tire other than some shredding along the edge from running flat. No nails, cuts or other problems. I pulled out my CO2 inflater and thought to at to at least get some air in the tire. Well that did not work, gas leaked out everywhere, but not into the tire. Note to self test this kind of stuff before putting it in the kit. To make a long story short we pushed the scoot to a near by bridge and locked it up to go get a trailer to bring it home. We brought an air tank to fill it up and the tire held air, but the valve stem was torn so it would leak it pushed a side. I had an Avon Venom on with 2,500 miles. When mounting the tire I had a new 90 degree valve put on. I am not sure why, but it may be the inertia from the weight of the chrome valve cap I put on the valve that casued it to stress when spinning and the stem tore right at the rim. Second note to self no more rubber valve stems and no more 90 degree stems, too much mass for the inertia. Glad it all ended well and really want to thank the guys that helped me out. It was truly in the middle of no where with only Gators and snakes.
