I did the stage 3 stock pipe mod on my 04 R*. No other mods. It runs a little lean, but not bad. A little decel backfire. Definetly more power. Everything else is stock including AIS. It took me about an hour and 1/2 to complete. I liked the sound. As a suggestion, you might want to check e-bay for some pipes already modified. I picked up a new set of stockers for $29 plus shipping. If I trade up I can go back to stock. Nice sound cheap!

You could probably get rid of the "decel backfire" by removing the AIS.

Yea, I know that the AIS removal will probably eliminate the backfiring, but I'm thinking about getting rid of this bike and trading up for a new one, so I want to leave stock. The backfiring at this point is minimal. I can live with it until I decide what I'm doing.

I just did the equivalent of a stage 1 mod to by *brand new* 05 Silverado. Last night, after owning the bike for only a week, I took the drill to the end of my tailpipes. Let me tell ya, this had me sweating!!! After dropping that much coin on my new precious new bike, taking a drill to it was very scary. I've never done anything custom to any of my bikes.
I did not follow the instructions as listed in the other post, instead I read somewhere that someone simply drilled through the cone on the end instead of removing it. I didn't even have to remove the pipes - in an hour I had it done. I put four 1/2" holes through each cone and through the baffle at about 4" in.
The results are amazing!!! The bike sounds so freaking cool now it's awesome! I really didn't want the bike to be ripping loud but I found factory didn't do the bike justice. Now, it's quite a bit louder and growls at stop lights and sounds fantastic when you open it up, but at cruise it's still pretty quiet. Just enough rumble to remind you of what you're sitting on top of .. but quiet enough that you can still talk with your passenger. I have no intention of taking it any further...this suits me perfect!
Total cost.. $0 Very happy camper.

I just completed the stage one stock drill job and after cutting the weld with my Dremel as per instructions I fought with the cone for a while. I finally gave up and came up with a much better method. I used a very small cut off wheel(about a 1" diameter} and drilled inside the final pipe about 1.25" deep and the cone just fell out in my hand and the bonus was the final pipe was nice and flush with the baffle plate. Then all I had to do was cut the holes in the baffle plate. She sounds much better but could be a bit louder for my taste though. In the post it said the stage one would offer a significant performance increase and tone but other than the tone I felt no increase in power. Anyone else with the stage one mod notice a little kick in power? I will probably go to stage three but didn't want to do it now cause I'm taking the bike to Tennessee next month and didn't want to be dicking around with rejetting till after I got back to New York. Anyone do the stage 3 and have to rejet or anything? I was wondering what needs to be done to the carb if anything after the stage 3 mod. My 04 Silverado 1700 doesn't seem to run too lean at all after I did the stage one mod. Any help is appreciated from the Gurus. Vick

Post edited by: vickk12785, at: 2006/11/27 12:19
