Just a warning to you that have carb puking...a friend of mine just had his bike catch on fire after it puked; luckily it was at a gas station and they put it out with an extinguisher, but it could have been worse:

Be sure to watch for things like this!

Good to see that they put the fire out before it got to much worse.

yeah, luckily they were at a truck stop for a break and a fire extinguisher was very close by; had they stopped in the middle of nowhere, the bike would have likely been a total loss.

Was the float stuck open and it backfired? What do you mean by carb puking?

Make sure the fire dept. reports to NTSB and yamaha If they won't he should. Glad all is okay well except the bike. As far as puke from the carb. It seems to me that it is a two factor one the carb bowl is two small and in a thermal heat sink. IMHO after brain storming with MS1700 who tried every option. The cure is run pumpless see tech section, and a large volume air kit ie BAK K&N Mr C mod or Any K&N you can fit there are a lot of airfilter options.

Looking at the picture, It looks like the guy had a speedstar airfilter. It was open all around. Was the fire after he got gas or during? Did he spill some while filling?

Mines done it before...... usually at a higher altittude. And on very hot days. Since I've had the carb tweaked...... it hasn't done it.

I get this carb puke. I had my dealers shop install a Baron's BAK. It sprays oil/gas onto the exhaust pipe for the front cylinder. It also bogs the motor down in the rain. I would love to correct this. I hate the sight of the burned puke on it and if it will cause a fire. The dealer says everything is ok. During the installation of the BAK the "carb vent hose" is shortened and left to vent to the air. The crank case vent hose is connected to the back of the filter. Is this where the puke is coming from? Should I just run this hose to the ground? I also had the dealer remove the AIS. Does this send the unburned fuel into my air filter?

the oil spray is from the crankcase vent and is not puking. puking is gasoline from the carb that has pushed out the carb throat from possible stuck float valve or too much pressure from the fuel pump. ae7168 the oily mess you refer to is just that, oil from the crankcase, as for the boging down in the rain, do you have the rain coat on it?

The rain cover looks like a garter belt and I can't see it doing any good. But I leave it on all of the time. So the crank case oil can be drained to the ground...right?
