cold storage 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Well....it's almost time to tuck her away. Probably next week unless the weather changes.

I'm thinking about storing her in a unheated garage. Never did it before.

Any tips to keep her safe and ready for the spring?

A good gas stablizer like seafoam or stabil, A battery tender, cover it and kiss it good night until mod time or spring time which ever comes first.

Building an 8x12 shed for the bike in the back yard. Gonna insulate it and have electrical access for a space heater when I work on it. StaBil and a battery tender are the basics for me. Buddy on mine puts an electric blanket on low on his Fatboy. To each their own.

I'm a little interested in this also. It gets cold up here in N. MI, forecast for 30º tonight. Temps -20º not unusual. I winterize the diesel in the sailboat by changing oil, filter and diesel stabilizer before lay up, then start her up in the spring and she's ready to go. Been doing this for 20+ years and no problems. Wonder if same procedure is recommended for the gas v-twin?

do what you did for your boat, have a full tank of gas,air up the tires and either take the battery inside or get a battery tender and leave hooked up on the battery till spring.
Everyone has different things they do but a few basics will get you by.

Put it up on a jack or blocks to keep the tires off the ground. Cover it. And do everything else they've said already.

I store mine in a unheated garage and have learned from the past.DO NOT cover it! especially with plastic or non breathing material. do plug a battery tender in. if the garage floor is concrete you NEED a vapor barrier under the bike. this is a must do. (metal object will pull moisture from the concrete and rust). I keep mine on the motorcycle/atv jack I bought it the Chinese tool store. aka(harbour freight)and here is the big deal........ I blow a 20" box fan at the bike on lowest setting. so long as air is moving across the metal it will not corrode or rust at all. we all have seen those big bubbles you park the bike in? they are nice because the also keep the dust off the bike but they are kinda pricey. so all in all i do 3 things

#1 add fuel stabilizer and fill the tank to the top! this reduces the ability for the tank to rust

#2 plug in the battery tender . your'e battery will be ready to go in the spring

#3 place a fan so to blow air across the entire surface of the bike. now you have to worry about the bikes finish

I change my oil and spark plugs every spring . this will be my bikes 4th storage so far no rust or corrosion on anything!

did I forget anything? its still early here. lol

I try to ride mine in the winter also. A nice leather jacket, some warm over-pants, one of those neck wraps and winter riding gloves and I'm all set. I'd like to get some highway bar chaps, but don't want to spend the money. Last year I went through 2 tanks of gas over the winter from riding and the occasional warm up in the garage.
