Stupid Mirrors!!! 1 Month ago

I was loading my Suzuki GS550L onto my trailer a few months back when it died on me on the side of the road. I was doing it alone at 11:30pm on the side of the freeway, on a tilt trailer, so it was pretty steep. Well, as luck would have it, the bike fell on me half way up. Nothing major, just the rear blinker, handle bar was bent in so it was pointing strait at you, and the one mirror shattered. I replaced all the parts, including shiny new big arm chrome mirrors, that provided great view of what was behind me.
Well tonight I was changing out the fuel filter in my R* and noticed a wee bit of rust at the base of my mirrors. I figured I'd swap out the new set I just got for my old ass bike, as the mirrors I got were pretty awesome. I installed the left one, did a comparison sitting on the bike to see how I felt with them. I liked how they looked, so I went to swap the right one. I couldn't get the damned thing off for the life of me, so I tried turning the other way. Bam, came right loose. So I'm like OK, cool, got it off. Went to install the new one and it didn't dawn on me that the right mirror was reverse threaded. My right mirror, however, was not. So I was unable to install my shiny pretty mirrors.
Why in Gods name would they make the right side reverse threaded? It makes zero sense at all. I thought maybe someone had it apart and installed the mount upside down. Hey, shit happens, right? Well, the mount is part of the front brake fluid reservoir, so it couldn't be upside down.
This makes no sense. You can't just install random mirrors with it like this. Could someone shed some light on this genius design?

All Yamahas are like that. I guess years ago Yamaha R&D had a Sake party and thought it would be a good idea. Probably thought it would help keep them from getting loose in the wind. only thing i can figure. Sake... bonzai

Yes it will. Doesn't really make a big deal unless you plan to replace mirrors, though. I was trying to put ones with longer arms on so I wasn't looking directly at my shoulder when looking in hte mirror, plus hte new ones were much nicer. You can still get them I'm sure, just gotta know to look for it before you buy. Not universal swappable mirrors like most are.

Yeah, I've got a set of mirrors sitting on the shelf waiting for adapters, too...found that out a while back. Makes no sense.
I had a 1970 Plymouth Duster, and the lug nuts on the driver side were reverse threaded. Found that out after snapping one off. It was explained to me as having had something to do with the Posi-traction rear end. Whatever. I was 17 at the time and NOTHING annoyed me.

Yes Yami's have the reverse thread on the right side mirror, even back when I had my '66 350. I always figured it was so you didn't break the mirror if you bumped into something. They would just come loose, or you can just fold them inward to get them out of the way, like West Coast mirrors on a truck. Problem with the adapters is that the mirror sits up higher with them. Most major aftermarket brands make specific mirrors for Yamaha, I believe.
