I've got a friend who used to flat track race on ice in Colorado with studs on his m/c tires. I'll bet he'd race you, MS1700!

Got to be a Roadstar, No studs, Should have mentioned that. Heck I had bikes like that too once rode all winter then two but ad a few hundered pounds to the mix and see how it feels then. You can't ride on Studs all winter, but you can on a Car Tire because it's a smooth transistion from dry roads to snow and icy roads.

I'll bet the car tire does do much better on ice! I plan on giving in to the Dark Side myself as soon as my Michelins wear out! I can make my Roadie into a Flat Tracker; all I need to do is remove the left floorboard, strap a steel plate onto my left riding boot, remove the battery, convert the engine to a total-loss electrical & oiling system, shave about 500 pounds from it somewhere, put studs in my tires & I'll take you on!

BadBikerBob what method did you use to load up the pictures. It's really churning! I pay to host mine myself so I know I'm not the guilty one. I took a shower while they loaded!

You think you can shave 500 off a Road*star? If I shave like me off and another 250 yea.

I always rode in winter, but never a Bike this heavy, I just have to say there is very little room for error. I was on Ohio Turnpike last year and the sorta ruts from where the trucks wheels run..... well it was icy and every time I got on the high side of a rut then weight of the bike made it slid sideways to the bottom of the rut. Very Erie feeling at 70 MPH trying to keep with the flow of traffic.

The weight of the bike is a gigantic factor. If it gets loose, head for the side where the gravel is. (My tip of the day)

Take a pic of your Rear tire new on the ground with bike straight up, you'll have maybe an inch of tread on the ground, Now wonder out and look how many inches a Car tire has.

Oh and BTW the Comtrac is available studded, If I lived in Canada, I might just have a spare rim and run one like Doc! Just kidding Doc.

Not as hard core as MS1700 but I ride in the teens sometimes single digits.
I wear a Tourmaster Flex jacket, Firstgear ht overpants, Alpinstar winter gloves,
Balaclava and Shoei fullface helmet. Nice an toasty, just sucks to be stuffed
like a bear. I need some warmer boots though.

If you mean, "Where did I get the pics?", the one with my Roadie & cafe racer I took with my BlackBerry & e-mailed it to my work computer. I have alot of pics saved in the "My Pictures" folder all sized at 499x499 pixels & 50 or less kilobytes so I can just post them on here almost instantly. The "ice wheelie" pic I just downloaded from Google & saved @ the proper size (that pic's not of my friend Jim, it's random. Jim has showed me videos of him racing but that was 20 years ago! He still has his flat track bike displayed in his shop.) If you meant, "How did I post them so fast?", I don't know. I guess that's due to our superfast internet here @ work. I don't have internet @ my house, except on my Blackberry. BTW, I could shave about 215 lbs from my Roadie if I just stayed off of it!

Someone mentioned their hands getting cold they could get heated hand grips ie:

or

just a thought

I went with the gloves because the part that gets cold is the outer part of the hand. No doubt they would be warmer with heated hand grips but the Road* electrical system is electrically challenged as it is so we have to make wise choices. Not so much of a problem with later models as earlier. And soon we may have a cure.
