Another Ape Question 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Alright, I am fairly new to the Roadstar scene, but have been around motorcycles for some time now. I would like to run a set of short ape hangers on the stock 2” risers (12”-13”). My question is what are the upper limits of the stock cables and wiring? I have read numerous posts on here about apes but none that really spelled out what the line is as far as being able to use factory cables / wiring or having to change them out and extend the wiring.

Just trying to get a good idea of what all I will need to change out so I can get it all on order at once instead of finding out a ½ hour into the install that I needed something more.

I have seen that Clifford is the man to talk to about extended cables if they are needed.

I think rule of thumb is 10" over for 15"-16" apes w/ stock risers. But, I'm sure you'll get a few opinions.

Mine is this:

Do a mock-up. Measure what you'll need. Only takes a few minutes and you won't be subject to the "One inch too short" or "Big, floppy cables". Everybody has their own taste when it comes to cable length.

It's really the only way to get it right the first time. Based on my collection of brake lines and cables, I wish I would have listened to my own advice...

This is my experience, I have an 02 Roadie, I tried a set of 12 high and 34 wide bars, the out come was, I routed the clutch and the throttle cables on the back side of the tree, they were stretched but would work, the brake would not. This was with the stock risers. I then went to 14 high 34 wide on 4 inch risers with 6 over on cables and 8 over on brake and stretched electric lines about 8 inch (just in case for future) Happy with that set up, for now anyway. I hope that helps a little. You could probably do an 8 or maybe a 10(close), unless you use buckhorn or something like that a little bit narrower. Good luck.MM

I went +6 on all the cables and hoses and added 12 or 13 inches to the wiring (planning for the future). I have some slack running the cables on the front side of the bars with 12" bars.

Jamie,

I like the look of the 12" not to high not to low. I am only 5'10" so I don't think I will be needing the 16" bars. Thanks for the info!

I'm 6'-5" and with the stock risers they were below my shoulders. Withthe 4" risers now they are just even with my shoulders. Trying to maintain some semblance of legality.

The guy that I bought my bike (05 roadstar 1700) from had installed a set of 12" apes on the stock risers. He used the stock clutch cable, throttle cables, and electrical wires, but had to get a longer brake cable. I'm nor sure how much over the brake cable is though. I just put on a set of 18" apes and lengthened the electrical wires 16 inches so I could run the wires through the bars and have enough extra to go behind the top of the tree and into the headlight bucket. The brake cable works, but is too tight so I have to get a longer one.

Basically all I know is that you can use the stock wires and cables (except for brake hose) with 12" apes. Hope it helps.

Hey, i'm the guy that BamaRS is talking about,,,I did use everything stock except for the upper brake line,,, I did have to reroute the other cables behind the trippletree. With the 12" bars everything was tight but it worked, with 10" everything should be just fine...Hope that helps

How tall are the bars/risers on the bike in your sig? Those look about right to me....
