When starting a R* should the lights go out while the starter button is pushed?

Silverado passing lamps only come on when the bike is running stock. The main light should not go out when starting, dim but, not out. Check your battery.

It's not that there is a problem, it's just that if I remember right the Virago I used to have was like that. Just wondering if the R* was the same way and mine wasn't working correctly. Also, my passing lights do come on when the key is turned on without the engine running.

Depends on how the PL's were installed. You can access a couple different spot on the harness.

Jmac,

Like others are saying, headlight might go dim (depending on how fresh your battery is. Other electrical components that don't draw much power will continue to function normally, even while starting. It's just that the starter draws so much power that the headlight can't draw all it wants. Other components just don't demand enough juice to get in the starter's way -- so to speak.

Thanks for the responses. With winter coming on I was just thinking about maximizing cranking power. Sounds like I had better wire the passing lights into a different place on the harness. Any thoughts on where that should be?

Direct to the battery via a relay that is tripped by Ignition on and still switched.

I believe the 05 or 06 had a special wire specifically for passing lamps (white (I think )) which came on when the bike is running. Prior years didn't have this special wire, so most folks tapped into either low or high beams or wired to the ignition (always on, that's how mine was). I rerouted mine to a kury 3 way switch over the master cylinder on the handle bar, near the throttle. Easy install. I used one switch for the PL, one for my silver bullets and one for running aux lights on the bike (lighted eagle, led reflector conversion (both front and rear), led strips under saddle bags). Easy access. Turn on when I want. Problem is remembering to turn them off . I've gotten much better at that.

Just my luck not to have a "special" wire. I'll have to look at a wiring diagram and see if I hook up my own special wire. Thanks
