Lifters ? Doc 5 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi Doc,

I have my engine apart at this time to check the valve clearance, I got real curious and took it down to the lifters. I have some questions at this point.

1. While the lifters are out, is there anyyway to check the lifters to see if they are still working properly?

2. The service manual says to keep the lifters in order, well they fell out of order, what if they get put back in a different position? (i.e. intake in exhaust, I assume I will have to recheck valve clearance. Push-rods are still in order)

3. What type of replacement lifters can or should be used, can you give me a couple different options other than the stock yami lifters?

I am looking forward to your response so that I can get this little project back on track. Thanks Doc!

Bike must have been sitting around for some time.

You probably needed only to adjust the valves but now that you have it apart.

The lifter 'seats' to the camshaft lobe so that's why it's important to put it back in the same spot. You can get premature failure if the lifters are switched or you put old lifters on a new cam. You only have 3000 miles but I would not take a chance. For the cost of the lifter I'd just replace them all. (It cost me $25 for 4).

Sealed Power JB-2011 or an equivalent cross-referenced lifter. I can't remember my brand but they were HL-2011. Name brand lifters (TRW, Sealed Power, Crane, Isky) are usually made by Johnson Tappet so don't get too hung up on the brand. Lifters with the "R" designation are race grade. They are internally 'heavier' than standard grade. Don't know whether it's worth it to go that route for the stock spring setup.
