running better on reserve? 2 Years, 2 Months ago
just finnished pump removal, ais removal and porting all at one time may have been mistake . bike generaly runs great. Saturday ran about 300 miles real hard, wot test ect. no problems , the entire day on reserve more by accident than anything, no fuel starve or misshaps. Sunday switched back to "on" possition first hard run starve again, kinda at a loss. Also seem to have alot of black soot build up in end of sampson longshots any idea's thanks. OH had a starve problem at first re-routed and thought it was over.

Did you trim the "on" tube on the petcock?

I have yet to do this mod, but have been reading up on it b/c I am kind of on the fence to how well it works. Anyway I have heard from a few people that the factory "on" tube height is to high into the tank and it doesn't allow for enough of a gravity pull. That would explain why it ran so well on reserve...the reserve tube is lower in the tank. I read it on this site - I will try and find the article. You could call and ask the shop that did the work. Otherwise you would need to pull the petcock out and inspect it. I also heard that venting the gas cap helps.

thanks,I did vent the cap I jumped over to old forum notes seems to make sense, It sounds like just loosen petcock, remove from tank cut 1/2 in. put back in (or leave on reserve)

when you trim the tube, take a Dremel and cut a notch around the top of the trimmed tube to make it like the one you cut off...that way you can snap the screen right back on the tube like it was originally and not just have it pushed down on the tube, hoping it doesn't fall off.

That SOUNDS really confusing, but once you take the petcock off it will be really clear and simple.
