Synthetic Questions 5 Years, 1 Month ago
Hello friends,
Couple of questions. At what point can one switch over to synthetic oil? I'm just over 600 miles at this point. And anyone use Amsoil or Royal Purple? When I make the switch, I will be using one of the above. Your comments are appreciated.

Good question and I have yet to see a good answer.

It seems that 2-3 K is about were a lot of riders switch.

I went to synthetic first oil change (800mi). 13K plus and it runs like a champ. Using Amsoil 20-50 (hot in La.) with a K&N filter.

You guys kill me

Both RP Max Cycle 20w50 and Amsoil MCV ARE JASO MA certified

Switched to synthetic at 800 Miles

a lot of Hi end cars come with synthetic oil right from the factory so it is not all that important that you use dino oil for an extended break in
Rings are said to seat better with dino oil but this usually happens within the first 500 miles and less important with hi tolerance newer engines ..and the R*'s "ceramic composite bore plating"

Myth: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic oil like Mobil 1.
Reality:
You can start using Mobil 1® in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:
Acura RDX
Aston Martin
Bentley Amage and Bentley GT
Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, XLR, XLR-V, SRX and STS and STS-V
Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06
Chevrolet SSR
Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
Chrysler 300C SRT-8 and Crossfire SRT-6
Cobalt SS
Dodge Ram SRT-10
Dodge Charger SRT-8, Magnum, and Viper
Jeep Cherokee SRT-8
Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
Mercedes SLR
Mitsubishi EVO III
Pontiac GTO
All Porsche vehicles
Saturn Red Line
Viper SRT-10

...but do make first oil change asap ...especially in motors like the R* where the clutch and the transmission run in the same oil as the engine...lots of fine metal particles enter the oil especially during the first 1000 mi...

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2007/04/18 01:49

Which brings me to something I've always wondered...are those magnetic oil plugs really worth a crap? Never used one in any vehicle, and it doesn't seem like the Roadie would need one once it's passed the break in period...

I believe they do help... lets say they cant hurt. why some OEM motors have them and others dont ..I really dont know

I sell lots of auto rep drain plugs...and only a few of the magnetic ones

...but yer oil filter is more important...

In fact I was considering them and ....those mag filter covers...

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2007/04/18 01:38

I bought my bike with 3k on it.. switched it over to Amsoil 20/50. It's a little quieter also, that 102 seems to love it.
