Cleaning burnt chrome 2 Years, 3 Months ago
|
|
|
I was reaching down to make an adjustment and my bomber/flight jacket hit the exhaust and a good part melted to it and baked on good. I tryed overn cleaner and it worked a bit, but what works to get that crud off without scratching up the chrome? I tried a few applications with the oven cleaner and I think I reach the limit of it's ability. I tried to see if some barryman's might disolve it but I think I heard a distinct defiant laugh coming from the burnt polyester as it had no affect.

Don'tknow if there is anything that will disolve that crud. Had the same thing happen to one of my bikes when I did a stupid thing by putting the cover on it before I let the exhaust cool. I took a very sharp pocket knife and scraped the crud off. obviously it marked the Chrome a little, then I took OOOO steel wool and repolished the marked Chrome and that put the polished finish back on. I realize there is probebly a better way but this works on gun polishing for bluing and chrome is a very hard metal so if you are careful this will work.

I had to clean some melted boot from the exhaust on mine and it came off with rubbing compound. Make sure you apply it with a damp/wet cloth though. It took some elbow grease but came off nicely and didn't leave a mark. Again don't use it dry or it will scratch.

A little simi-chrome or some Brasso will work if you have any lying around.

Thanks guys. I've def had to remove any idiot mark or two off a stainless 1911 and that came out good wet sanding with paper but I was just worried about taking off the finish because chrome is so thin. I'll give those remedies a try and report back.

The wife has on occasion touched the hot exhaust pipe & melted rubber from her shoe to the pipe. I have a jug with some MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) in it & have found that if I let it get cool, MEK will take it right off the chrome. Don't let it get on the paint as it'll remove it too! Btw, MEK is an active ingredient in lacquer thinner.

My wife has left more than her share of shoe soles on my pipes, a friend of mine said to use a nickel to scrape it off. Seemed to work well.

I've used both straight acetone and good ol' Turtle Wax Chrome Polish...both have worked very well to take burnt matter off the pipes.

The nickel trick works well. The nickel material is softer than the chrome coating. The pipes have to be hot, don,t burn your fingers.I use pliers to hold the nickel. After the exhaust cools, follow up with 0000 steel wool and a cleaner. Have used this method many times to clean things off my pipes including melted PVC (don,t ask).
