FINALLY got to ride at 5500 RPM! 5 Years ago
Well, I FINALLY got the chance to get out for a 100+ mile ride yesterday to use up the Seafoam-riddden gas that's been in the tank for nearly a month. I did a shock treatment and planned to burn up the gas in a day or two, but then life got in the way.

Anyway, it was just nice to get out. My first real ride with the ported manifold and the new new new carb setup. Ran like a top! No popping on decel, smooth acceleration, blipped with no coughing or sputtering, no backfiring...what the Hell? Did I get it right finally? Damn...I think I just jinxed myself...

Ran a lot of it at 3500-4000 RPMs to burn the winter gunk out. Even hit the rev limiter (a nice soft sputter, no cutout) with the new Speedstar ignition module, and I can confirm that the Speedstar is 5500 RPM and that my new tach is dead-on right!

Came home, drained the oil, and MAN what the Seafoam did to that! I had changed the oil right before winter storage, and probably only had 150 miles on the oil change, but it cam out black as pitch! It also smelled more like gas than oil (I think--could have been my imagination)...I had no idea I had that much crap in the engine...

Put in 4 qts. (no more, maybe a little less) of Mobil 1 V-Twin and a new K&N oil filter. Ready to go again!

That's great!

Hope the keeps on running good.

I assume that you not going to fiddle with the carb.

Nope...leaving the carb alone for a while...I'm going to run a few tanks of gas through to see what kind of mileage I'm getting, then MAYBE a PMS tweak will be in order. Other than that...no.

Doc, I'm on Mountain time zone...got some meetings this morning...about 2 PM?

Well, I did it in 2nd gear, and if I remember correctly it was about 75 MPH. I had it hovering around 5000 RPM, and it kinda scared me...the big 1700 with the HK 3" pipes makes quite a racket at those RPMs!

But I still had plenty of throttle left, gave it a twist and she bounced right up to 5500 and was still pulling strong before Mr. Rev Limiter kicked in. It was loud, but smooooth. I can only imagine the speed I would have hit if I'd done it in 3rd gear...too much for this old dude! But it's nice to know it's there... No wonder that tank only gave me 31 MPG... But it had a ton of Seafoam in it and was blowing out crap, but no backfires, coughs, hiccups...nothing. VERY pleased with the new Speedstar module!

Have you done any work on the heads to allow the motor to hit 5500 rpm, I was think I read somewhere that it was not a good idea to go over 5000 rpm unless you replace the springs with new heavy duty one instead.

I guess I just got off the boat, but what are you talking about when you say "Seafoam". Did you add some type of cleaner to the carb or something?

"seafoam" is a carbon cleaner you can add in your tank for a good cleaning! Auto parts house product.BB
