Hey jso

Don't have a clue what your talking about for the most part but I agree that once you start doing mods to the bike you can't go by stock settings anymore. The bike's gonna want what it wants.

You nailed my point Musky. Gee, you have a knack for doing that, dontcha know.

Once you move away from stock parts you can only really use some specs as a baseline and then it's tinkerville to get things dialed in. That's ok with me though as I have almost as much fun wrenching as I do riding.

Re:Engine Cough 5 Years, 1 Month ago
Well guys I just now today am able to find time to mess with the carb a little. I decided that my first step would be change the air filter since I could blip all I wanted last summer and it made a definate improvement. I took it down the road and noticed that the cough is gone if I pull the choke out or even partially out. I decided that I would mention this as it might be a clue as what to do next. As I said, I could blip all I wanted last summer with no cough. It isn't that I like to really blip, just crackle the pipes a little sometimes.

A carb cough usually signifies a lean condition. You have more or less verified it by pulling the choke out a bit and seeing the cough disappear.

Try turning your PMS out 1/4 turn.

Re:Engine Cough 5 Years ago
I had the same issue with my 2006 Road*. This past weekend, I installed a tach and found that my idle was set at about 750 RPMs. I bumped up the idle to spec (850-950 RPMs) and the cough went away!

Good luck.

Re:Engine Cough 5 Years ago
Just wanted to let you guys know that I turned the PMS out a quarter of a turn and that fixed the problem to the point that it very rarely coughs even when rock the throttle fast. Also thanks for the idle info as mine was a little too high. Besides fixing the cough, I noticed a definate improvement in fuel economy. I haven't checked it yet to see my actual mileage is but there is a noticable improvement.

Mine's not coughing anymore either after bumping the idle up. I also adjusted the cables to have the proper 4-8mm free play at the grip.

Went for a 200 mile run into Wisconsin last Saturday and she ran flawlessly. Not a single cough.

Re:Engine Cough 5 Years ago
Yep. The idle tweak fixed me up, too.

Funny, I readjusted my throttle cables, too, this past weekend, since I already had the tank off to install the tach. I had noticed that there was no free play in the cables. The dealer adjusted the cables at the carburetor, so there was virtually no wiggle room at the throttle grip. Arrggghhhh! I repositioned the pull cable so that all of the adjustment was at the throttle grip, then made the final adjustment at the throttle grip. We're good to go now.

I think some of us (me , for sure) love the sound of a slow loping v-twin. Problem is, the motor is not fond of those running conditions. Besides, who wants to idle anyway, when you could be out RIDING! BB
