Those with lowered forks, I need some info 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Hiya,

According to specs, stock fork travel is 5.5 inches. If you have installed lowering springs or used some other technique to lower the front, does that shorten the fork travel (to say 4.5) or does it move the travel up, leaving it still at 5.5 inches. Somehow this seems more confusing that I want to ask. The thing is I need to lower the front and raise the fender, and don't want to slam the fender into the lower tree.

Thanks everyone,
Paul

Lowering springs are actually shorter springs so .... they lower the front end reducing the amount of travel.

Lowering the front has nothing to do with the fender ... the two are independent of each other.

If you take the springs out you will see the max that the lower tree will travel downwards .... 5.5" more or less.

OK, so there is some kind of "hard stop" internal to the forks. Didn't know if the springs coil binding was used as the hard stop.

Thanks

I believe the spring is the 'hard stop' .... when the spring is completely compressed it becomes the stop for the fork.

When you have the front end totally bottomed out, the fender shouldn't hit the lower tree. At least they didn't on my bike. And yes, however much lower you go in the front, you lose that much in travle. I'm down to 3 inches now.

Front wheel and fender move in unison, opposite of the rear fender/wheel relationship. Also you can always loosen the triple tree clamps and lower the tubes within the trees themselves; I lowered the front of mine 1/2" with no problem in about 10 min.
