why not an oil light? 3 Years, 3 Months ago

Why the heck did they deecide not to add a low oil pressure warning light or add that to the engine light's duty's? Seems that would be a priority on any engine especially an air cooled one that relys on that oil moving at all times. Second question, why can't one put a negetive grouded sending unit where the oil pressure is tested? Have a dummy light mounted anywhere you want, run the positive to any power sorce and the negetive to the sender. No pressure grounds the sender making the dummy light come on until you start the engine and the oil pressure causes the sender to loss it's ground and the light shuts off. If your riding and the light comes on ya know ya better stop the bike pronto before you have way more problems than a faulty oil pump or leak. Oil sending units are cheap, like 20 bucks or so.
Just a thought

Theres no reason why you can't mount a low oil pressure light on the bike somewhere. If you get real fancy, you could have it shut the bike off when theres no oil pressure. So long as the starter button would override it so that you could still start the bike of course.

See, that's what I'm talking about. I have always noticed on an ironhead just how simple the setup really is. The light even flickers when you kick start it till she turns over. Percise yet simple. The sender unit is really small too.

If I was going to the trouble to rig up a light, I'd just mount a guage so I could tell exactly what the pressure was. Just my .002.

How bout an ear piercing alarm........ The gauge and light are great, if you see them..I know from experience I had ford fairlane that snapped the drive shaft for the oil pump, and I didn't see the light soon enough....

It would be simple to hook up an idiot light or a pressure gage; however, neither one does much good! whether a light or a gage you never see the indication untill it is too late. When you hear it acting strange you look at the light or meter and say "damn I should have stopped sooner!" I have seen instances where on a car or an airplane an oil leak was such that oil came out onto the windshield, THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET PEOPLES ATTENTION AND PREVENT SERIOUS DAMAGE!
Clifford
May I add that a light or a gage is good if you have a failure at startup. If the pump has failed and therefore the light doesn't go out or the gage needle doesn't move; that should get your attention and you shut it right down. On the road unless you are looking at the light when it comes on or looking at the needle as it heads toward zero it won't get your attention and therefore isn't of much value.

I agree with Clifford, however there is a Tech Article that tells how to install an oil pressure gauge. You could either T just before the gauge and put a sending unit there to activate the light or just put the sending unit in place of the gauge.
Good luck and have fun.

Ever since auto manufacturers decided to replace gauges with "idiot lights" I've found them to work generally when it's too late. If I was to add some kind of oil pressure sensor onto my scoot, it would darn well be a gauge.

Idiot lights are short hand for "pull over, I'm toast".
