reserve distance 5 Years ago
First time poster, long time reader. I've been reading this forum for about a year. Find the technical info useful and enjoy the humor.

I've got an '05 Midnight Silverado. Stock engine/exhaust/intake. Had it about a year and have about 6,500 miles on it. Love the bike. Moved up from a VStar 1100.

Anyway, here's my question: Once you hit reserve or the fuel warning light comes on, how far can you go? I'm thinking 20 miles shouldn't be out of the question. Sunday the fuel warning light came on, moved it to reserve and got about 3 miles. There was still fuel in the bottom on the tank. My guess is approx. a 1/4". Is that normal or should the tank pretty much be sucked dry?

Thanks in advance,

dbroadie

P.S. Wife was on the back which made it all extra special!!!

I have gone easily 15 miles with the warning light on. Maybe a faulty fuel gauge?

At least you had someone to send for more gas while you guarded the Roadie.

The fuel light and reserve are different things.

As 2000roadstar said, when the fuel light goes on you have "easily 15 miles". When the bike runs out of fuel with the light on, you switch to reserve and then have another 30 miles or so before you're completely dry. So together you should have at least 40 miles.

Don't know why yours doesn't work this way. Even if the gauge was broken you should have easily gone 20 miles.

Are you sure you did not have it on reserve? Easy mistake to make.

The lowest MPG I've ever gotten was 35 (although I average a little higher) and the book says that there is .92(gal) for reserve so I figure that reserve should last at least 32 miles or so. But this is only my theory. I've never had to test it because my tired old bones don't last near as long as the gas tank. I just top it off when I stop for a stretch.

I drive through the light 15-20 mile routinely, then hit reserve. Drove 15 miles the other night on reserve (2am) trying to find an open station. Did put 4.6 in at 199.9 miles. Guessing I could have gone 20 more.BB
