Doc--

In another thread, you were talking about the mcd rating of individual LEDs. Would a nice cluster of white 10mm 130,000 mcd LEDs be fairly...illuminating?

Check it out...prewired with resistors and all, and dirt cheap ($1.20 each)...

TIA,

130 kMCD is great!; it would cause temporary blindness to tailgaters.

BUT it's not only the MCD rating. I looked at the specs for one and it is rated as 12 degree angle. That is why it's so bright. As the angle and MCD increae then the price increases. As the MCD increases the angle decreases and vice versa, as the angle increases the MCD decreases. There are however certain limitations governed by a combination of the MCD and angle.

Also for equivalently priced LEDs, as the angle increases the MCD rating of the LED drops. Or put another way, a wide angle high MCD LED is expensive compared to a low angle same MCD rating LED. Obviously you'd want something like 120 degree LED rated at 50,000 but you'd never get one that bright.

The price on these is not bad considering the MCD value. When I was shopping around last year it seemed that the 35 degree at 5000 MCD were reasonably priced. They have some 40 k 45 degree reds for 27 cents each but you need to buy 1000 of them

LEDs need a good diffuser in front to 'spread out' the light. The wider the angle the less critical the diffuser.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to check it over more carefully later and see if I can find anything for myself.
