Dragonfly Fairing - Initial Impression 2 Years, 2 Months ago
Pulled my Dragonfly fairing out of the box last night, and I must say for $1,000 ($899 + $90/S&H) I'm not overly impressed. Here's a few initial things I noticed while giving it the once over.

1. Their $79 windshield is just a cheap piece of flat plexi-glass cut to shape. They didn't even bother to round off the edges after they cut it either.

2. This fairing is NOT a direct bolt-on piece as they claim it to be. To mount it, you first have to break the nuts off the backside of your windshield mounting bracket. Then you have to drill four new holes to line up with the holes in their mounting brackets. (why the *#&@ they couldn't just make the holes in their brackets to line up with the existing holes in the mounting bracket is totally beyond me)

3. The fiberglass halves seem to be of excellent quality and are about 3/16" or so thick. They did however leave the trimmed edges of the outer fairing pretty rough, so I'll have to round them off a little before it goes off to paint. All the included hardware is either chrome or stainless, which is a plus.

4. The stereo cutout is an oddball size for their proprietary head units. I knew this going in though so not a big deal...just have to widen it by about a half-inch on either side.

5. The bottom inside speaker mounting posts are only held in by about two threads, and the others don't look to be in much further. Given the weight of some 6x9 speakers, it makes me raise an eyebrow as to whether they'll be up to the task or not.

6. Directions are pretty basic and include templates for the holes you will need to drill as well as wiring instructions if you opt for their stereo system.

Not real thrilled that I had to break off the 4 nuts on the backside of the windshield mounting bracket or that I have to drill four holes to be able to mount this "bolt on" part, especially when it could have been easily avoided by just designing the mounting bracket to use the existing holes.

Now if my drill batteries would hurry up and charge I might actually get something accomplished today. lol

Oh, it's the right mounting brackets and all. Their instructions clearly explain having to break off the nuts and drilling the new holes. They even include templates for drilling them.

Pretty candy-a$$ if you ask me.

Just curious what is the reason to remove the welded nuts? Are they in the way of the new hole location?

Yep, their brackets fit to the inside of the OEM windshield bracket. My guess is they didn't want to mess with having to put a bend into the brackets so they'd mount on the outside like the OEM windshield does. Still doesn't explain why they couldn't have used the existing holes though.

I went with Polk Db series in a HD fairing, 5.25 on the ends, 4" in center where normally speedo and tach go, and not a bad price, and marine certified, previously had Cerwin vega on ends and jensen for centers, these polk blow them away. got them when they were 25% off at circuit city before they went belly up
