Saved the Bike not the foot 2 Years, 2 Months ago

|
So I was on the way to work on Tuesday morning when this a##hole cager decides to cut over 5 lanes on the freeway to get off. Everyone startes slamming on their brakes to avoid an accident so I have no choice but to do the same. I was about 5 feet from the car in front of me and almost completely stopped when the back tire decides to loose traction and slip out on me causing the scoot to start to go over. I slammed my left foot dowm to stop the scoot from going over and came to a stop about a foot from the car's bumper.
Traffic started up again and I took a deep breath and went the last mile to work. As soon as I got off of the scoot I realized that my left foot really hurt. I could tell it was starting to swell so I decided not to take of my shoe because if I did I knew that I wouldn't be able to get it back on. I rode the scoot home and when I took off my boot and sock my big toe was about twice it's normal size and was totaly purple.
I got up yesterday morning and could hardly put any weight on it so my wife insisted that I go to the doctor to have it checked out. They took x-ray's and found that I had a compound fracture on the middle bone of the toe. They put it in a cast and one of those stylish boots for two weeks.
Bad news, I broke my toe and no scoot riding for about five to six weeks.
Good news, I saved the scoot and it only cost me the $10 deductible for my foot instead of $$$$ to fix the bike.

Good to hear you're ok. It was your "lucky day".Just think if you didn't have all the years of riding experience, what the outcome might have been.

First off let me say I'm glad your o.k.
Now let me be the devils advocate. This may piss you off but I want others to read this and learn from others mistakes. You said that you were about 5' off the car in front of you. Well as much as I hate to say it you were riding too close to the car in front of you. Even if you were not that close when this all started had you left yourself a large enough gap it would have allowed you the time you would need to stop safely. These are the type of mistakes riders make because we become over confident in our riding and we forget what others can do to us. I'm speaking from experiance and having made my own share of mistakes over the past 40 years I have riden.
Again I'm glad your ok but I hope it makes you stop and think how bad this could have been and perhaps it will make you think about giving your self a little more leeway cause there are a lot and I mean a lot of idiot cagers out there and you must keep yourself prepared.

Glad you are OK and the foot will be better soon.
I'm wondering how much it cost to remove the seat since I know from experience the "pucker factor" is quite high in an incident like that.

My mistake in how I put it. When I started to brake I was about 40 feet from the car in front of me. It wasn't till I was about 5 feet and almost completely stopped that the tire let loose. After 35 years of riding a bike and 20 years of driving a 36 foot motorhome I know that stopping distance is much more criticqal than in a car.

Danny, I think he was 5' when he finally stopped, not at the time of the people stopping.
