gas mileage? 5 Years ago
I am only getting little over 30mpg. Running A Bak,cobra speedsters. Just removed AIS. She runs like a champ and sounds great etc...but just doesn't get any better mileage...never has, even since she was stock. Any suggestions?

If I baby the bike I can get close to 40 mpg. But when I am having fun with it being heavy on the throttle I get about 35 mpg. What sort of riding habits do you have? How hard do you take off? When do you shift? That will have a roll in fuel mileage as well.

Last tank, with no mods other than Stage One pipes, I got 47 mpg...I typically average 43-45 mpg with a low of about 38 mpg in the dead cold of winter (riding temps 40&deg +/-). I rarely whip the ponies...

30 mpg, even with your mods seems awfully low unless you are always honking on it...could be running very rich; assuming the bike is running fine otherwise...but 30 is way low IMHO!

I got around 30 stock. Now mid 40's. What are your settings? The Roadie can fool you. It will run great set way rich. A lot of in town light to light blasting will kill the mpg too.

I do honk on it a bit...can't stop myself...i did not jet myself, but the settings given to me by the carb god from the Baron's site gave me this which my guy who put it on said he matched:
170 main
baron's needle, clip on 5th slot counting from the fat end toward the point
put ONLY plastic donut spacer over the point and slide to clip
PMS 3 1/4 out from lightly seated..

any suggestions...

I would suggest going to the Third clip from the blunt end of the needle with the white spacer and a metal washer under it. Your needle is WAY RICH...

Also start the PMS screw 2 turns out from seated if your intake manifold is ported, or...

PMS 2 1/2 from seated if not ported.

Do you happen to know what size primary jet is in there? Stock is 35, you should keep stock.

Post edited by: JDoza, at: 2007/05/09 11:10

Runs like a champ < > good gas mileage

Tough to get both

You're rich on the midragne so from the top try .... washer, clip on 4, plastic spacer, washer.

That should increase the gas mileage (unless you're constangly on it) and if it runs good then try ..... washer, clip on 3, plastic spacer, 2 washers.

Before changing the needle, try the WOT test to see if the main is good.

You need a thin long handled screwdriver to reach the PMS. It's probably the easier part of the carb to 'jet'. Check the pics in the Tech Tips section to see where it's located.

I just use NGK. I tried Autolites' once and it ran badly.

I was getting around 30 in town with 170 main BAK and ported manifold with HK2 pipes. I went to a 167 main BAK needle with the clip on 3rd grove spacer and two washers, 40 pilot and a Barons PMS out 2 1/4 turns. I finally put in oversized o-rings and am now getting around 40 in town. I may try and go back with the 35 pilot now. Also running Autolite 4164 plugs and she runs great.
