What would be the symptoms. . . 2 Years, 2 Months ago
Of too cold a spark. I just pulled the plugs (installed in January NGK 7803's) and gapped them. Out of the box they were set loose at 026.
My feeler guage is old and some of the numbers are unreadable, so I had a 026 and 007 and set them a tad loose and ran it down the road.
It's running better than it was but still a little hesitant in 5th and slow to excellerate beyond 70. I don't run that fast on a normal basis but it was sick beyond that in 4th and 5th. 4th seems to have a lot more oomph now but a tad lethargic in 5th. . .it will get from 60 to 70 pretty quick but it just seems to bottom out. . .it's my bad that I didn't gap them before initial installation but should I warm it a little bit more? Before the regap, my gas milage went from 51MPG to about 20. . .this is what I really want to fix!!

Have a great evening. . .rain here tomorrow possible thunderstorms. . .

Remember, keep the speedo to the sun and the rubber to the road!!

Thanks alot!

if not mistaken, those are the iradium plugs. Have to be real careful if going to gap, the tip on them is very fragile, extremely fragile I would check to make sure you didn't break them. and don't pull plugs on a hot engine.

Your spark gap is a little close, try 35k and see if it helps..........

E-Man. . .you're correct, the tips aren't broken and I used a pair of very small needle nosed pliers, worked like a champ!
mfayad. . . yup you, too are correct. Don't know what happened to mine but they were all a little on the cold side.
Flashback. . .thanks I will do just that. . .I gapped the old plugs (possibly stock plugs in only has 9500 miles on it) and they too were cold. . .I will open them up a pinch more. . .It does run much better now.

Thanks all! Weather supposed to be in the 70's. . .for the midwest that's above normal. . .Indian Summer? What ever it's still great.

I would gap them at .035 like flashback said. Are you still running the gas from storage? Or have you put in fresh gas? I would also check the fuel filter for flow restriction. And drain the fuel bowl.

Dave. . .gas is fresh. . .well as fresh as I can get here in Illinois. . .actually last Saturday. Sea Foam was pretty strong in there for over the winter. . .ran it after initially put in the plugs and it seemed fine. . .HOWEVER I didn't get much over 60 and it was all I wanted to do with the temps. . .38. . .but you did bring something up that I really wanted to swap out and that's the fuel filter. . .thanks for that reminder. BUT if I had a restriction, wouldn't that have effect on any speed. . .I can hit the rev limiter in 1st thru 3rd. . .before I regapped the plugs 4th and 5th was sputtering real bad 60-80MPH. Last night, after the regap, it ran great with just a little sputtering around 80-90 in 5th. . .again I don't ride it that hard but wanted to see if the symptoms came back. . .

thanks!!
