Ultima ThunderFire Starter troubles!! 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Okay, so I got my Ultima starter on, and finally got her out for a ride today, and the darn thing left me stranded. Somehow the gear on the end came undone and now when I hit start it just spun without turning over the engine. I push started it by pushing, and got it home, removed the starter, and that gear was still sitting inside the engine compartment. I was able to fish it out with a long needlenose, but it looks like there is still a loose piece in there I cannot get to. Does anyone have a Ultima starter they could take a picture of the business end of it, as I am not sure what held that gear onto the starter, so am not sure what I am looking for inside my engine. Also is it normal for there to be a bunch of grease, oil, etc, as I am guessing that came out of the starter. It is all over inside where the nose of the starter goes. NOT HAPPY ABOUT MY ULTIMA!!!!

I took a pic of it before I installed. Give me a few moments to download it from my camera and edit it.

Thanks Doc
I took a couple pics myself and posted them here, but it only shows the back. I talked to Pookl Racing, where I got it, and they are sending me a new one. They are great to work with!!! But I am concerned about what part of that starter is still in my bike that I cannot get to. What holds that outside gear on, can you tell?
Thanks
Jim

Looked at the pics and can't tell from the angle I took them. I intention was to get a side by side shot to show the difference in length so I can't see what's on the end. In inside out, from what I can tell there is a large gear, next a small gear and a groove .... and form the angle I can't see if there is anything in the groove.

I might take mine out this weekend to check it out.

Compared the OEM and Ultima and from the angle I have they both look identical at the end.

My old one is already gone, so I have nothing to compare it to. Is there a rubber o-ring holding the big gear on?

The piece on the end is a circlip. It may have been missing on yours but probably not installed properly and spun off.

Hmmmm ...... I wonder if my is a ticking time bomb.

I guess I need to go in and find out.
