Tach install advice, I still have sand in my ears! 5 Years ago
OK, the vacation cobwebs are a sett'n in. I know I just read (2 weeks ago) a post on a simple way to wire a 4 wire tach, and now I can't find it. Is the orange wire on the left coil (shift side) the negative side of the coil? Also, where did the rest of you who have installed tachs go for the rest of your wiring needs, inside the headlight bucket? She's apart in the garage, and really wants to be ridden tonight, so any help you might have on this subject is MUCH appreciated.BB<br><br>Post edited by: Big Bear, at: 2007/05/13 14:28

Thanks Doc, now, can you tell me if the orange wire is the negative side as these coils don't seem to be marked. Thanks again, BB.

No. The orange wire goes to the ignitor unit.

I believe the case is the ground but I'm not sure.

Bear, when you get the new pics, also fill us in on the tach. Brand, where you got it, etc. I'm looking so interested in why you chose the one you did.

Thanks

I bought my Drag Specialties Mini Tach from Oneida Suzuki in NY (I'm on the East Coast) for $53.99 (plus shipping):

http://www.oneidasuzuki.com/store/parts-accessories/drag-specialties-mini-8000-rpm-tachometer.html

I bought a Kuryakyn #4018 P-Clamp on Ebay for $17.99 (plus shipping) to mount the tach to the handlebars - the included D/S clamp is very cheezy.

http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&amp;ci=2959

I wired everything to the left side coil, using piggyback connectors (available at Auto Parts stores), so I wouldn't have to tap or splice wires. I can easily revert to the stock setup if I ever needed to do so.

The tach is lighted and works great. The case and mounting bracket are stainless steel. It's very obtrusive, but easy to read.

A tach is a necessity on the Road*.

Out of curiosity, why do you say that?

Most will confirm that the Road* doesn't like to be lugged and runs best at higher RPMs.

Once you are underway, the sound from the motor begins to get competition from other extraneous &quot;sounds&quot; - wind, pipes, traffic, etc. - making it more difficult to tell where you are in the RPM range. This is particularly true AFTER an upshift, since there is a noticeable drop in RPMs.

Additionally, (hopefully) your brain is already actively engaged in SIPDE (Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide and Execute), so listening to your rev range just becomes another thing to do, and a lesser priority one at that.

Having a tach makes it very easy to &quot;see&quot; exactly where you are in the rev range at any given time, without having to think about it. There's no guesswork.<br><br>Post edited by: 06MidnightStar, at: 2007/05/14 14:02
