Who mounts and balances their own tires? 3 Years, 2 Months ago
Just wondering if anyone m&b's their own tires? If I can buy tires online instead of local and save around $150, why not? I believe in supporting local business, and convienience is worth something, but not as much as they charge sometimes. I've always been a "do it yourselfer". I can't make myself price tires local and then go back and have him mount tires I got somewhere else. How well do dynabeads work on spoke wheels? I'm looking at M880's.

I've done 2 rears and 1 front so far (and that's spoked rims) . I use offroad spoons to get the old ones off and I use stick on weights. I bought a balancer off EBay, but you can make one (I think the instructions are in the Tech articles). The dealer hasn't seen my bike since I bought it 2years and 36,500 miles ago.

I have the harbor freight machine.

It works great and I have been doing my tires on all 3 of my bikes for several years now. You can balance your tires by using the axle and a couple of jack stands. Although I built a balancing stand with presion bearings.

Nitrogen and Dyna Beads is the way to go. When you Balance a tire and wheel, that is the beginning of becoming unbalanced, hitting a hole, wear, changing air pressure all sorts of stuff affect the balance, With the balancing beads, it's always being re balanced as it turns. So, no matter what is going on, it's in balance from day you put it on until you take it off, at any speed and any wear. What Dyna says on their website has always been true for me. I like using them. I toss mine in when I get my tires mounted - still in the bag, Bag bursts as you ride and wha la! And I am lucky enough a local tire shop will mount my tires for free. Spoke or not no difference.

So what, like 2 oz per tire? I like the idea of no visible wheel weights.

That is the way to go but remember to never put in that tire sealer. Your dyna beads will stick in a 2 ounce clump and it will for sure be in the wrong place.

While I can't comment on Dyna Beads, I've been doing my own tire changes on the motorcycles since the early seventies. All I have for equipment are a few tire irons and some rim guards. Check out youtube for some helpful ideas on getting the tire bead off the rim. You will need some leverage. I use a 2x4, and some blocks of wood.

Oh yea forgot about that plus, no corrosion at the weights. Go Here and on left click on Tire Charts Motorcycle and the chart will pop up. Each tire has a specific "Dose"

Two drawback amongst tens of Bennie's,
The can't add tire sealer thing or if you do go right to repair shop. And when checking the air the beads can get in the stem, so have a compressor on hand to blow in stem 1st. I have some special stems designed to thwart this but I didn't put em on my MC but on my Car.
